I always had this problem on my old Athlon64 3000+. <p dir="auto">If you leave the external drive connected when Windows XP starts up, the system tries to read it or something like that, but the thing is, it never starts up. Do you get any error messages? Does it get stuck on any particular screen? The most likely thing at first glance is that it's trying to boot from the external hard drive and since it doesn't have an operating system, it gets stuck.
