Help with network card on a laptop

ola, pues me han dejado un portatil DELL Inspiron 1100 (es americano) bueno pues resulta que cuando instalo la tarjeta red con sus drivers correspondientes (los he bajado de la pag oficial) el dispositivo se instala correctamente incluso me pone en propiedades que funciona correctamente pero al conectarlo a un router no se enciende ninguna lucecita de atras ni hace el intento de cojer conexion, alguien sabe de que puede ser?? puede ser que los drivers de la tarjeta de red no sean los suyos??? tambien e provado varios cables de red y nada tanto cruzado como directo.
