Laptop GPU overheating. Change thermal paste.
-
Hello, good morning to all.
I have an ASUS laptop in which the GPU temperature reaches 80 degrees, which I think is not normal. I want to change the thermal paste on the GPU, which has a heatsink on top of it with its copper tube that goes to the fan. The thing is that the GPU does not have thermal paste on top, but around the GPU and on top it has a kind of semi-transparent brown sticker that is stuck, and I don't know if it's good to remove it or not, or what is underneath it is thermal paste, because it is not very clear. Any help?
Thanks, Best regards.

Hello and welcome.
It happened to a colleague recently. That sticker is called a thermal pad, and it does the job of thermal paste, but especially it is responsible for establishing contact between the copper piece and the GPU, since sometimes they are not fully together as they should be, due to the assembly and distribution of the laptop components.
That thermal pad is essential, although over time it dries out and performs its function worse, so it is advisable to replace it with one or more new ones, although they are difficult to find. An option is to replace it with abundant thermal paste, but that slight distance between the heatsink and the GPU will still be a cause of poor heat dissipation. The most practical thing is to remove the thermal pad, put thermal paste and put it back on top, even if the thermal paste is deteriorated it will help, although the best thing as I say is to replace it with new one/s.Regards

I advise you to remove that sticker, clean everything well with alcohol and put this paste on it: Arctic Cooling MX-4 ORACO-MX40001-BL Thermal Paste
