[Novato] C2D E8500 + Asus Striker II Formula
-
Hello, well I have a Zalman cnps9900LED under a core 2 duo E8500 and under it an ASUS STRIKER II FORMULA.. well as some of you know I'm going to put a good graphics card that it's about time.. and I would like to do as little as possible the inevitable effect of the NECK BOTTLE... I would like to know about programs for OC or how to increase the computer's performance without the risk of burning it.. since I will use it daily and I want something stable.. another question is if I update the motherboard's bios will I gain something??? I already know that it's a process in which the motherboard can be left dead if done wrong... I have touched the bios and I have put the micro to 4,00ghz.. but it was a long time ago and I didn't trust my actions very much and I want your advice, regards

Set the processor voltage to manual at 1.2 and start testing from there. You can start with an FSB between 350 and 375, run Prime95 for a bit to see temperatures, and if you see more than 65º in CoreTemp (to name a monitoring program), stop it, you don't want to mess it up. Remember to lower the memory to the minimum (if it's by divider 1:1 and by frequency 667), you will have time to test what they can handle later after testing the CPU.
Once you have an OC that doesn't go over 65º at 100%, you have to leave Prime95 running for 8 hours to make sure it's stable.

ok.. now I am at the beach but as soon as I get back home.. I will try it.. thanks for the info Obione.

I've been getting a bit of a feel for OCs... well, I now understand FSB, voltage, and multiplier... but I'm still a bit confused about memory latencies and stuff... but as obione says, once I have the OC tested and with stable temperatures... I'll proceed with the RAM...
well, I've seen that my micro... codenamed: wolfdale(E8500) is called the overclocking monster... I've seen people overclock it perfectly between 4.0 to 4.7 ghz with no problems...
even the case of pushing it to 5063ghz cooled only with air and it starts up and stays without problems
to be honest, I'm a bit shocked and I've had a couple of ideas...1-Does overclocking a micro to have it stable and without overheating take away its life... even if it's a low OC?
2-Is there aconfiguration´´ for the e8500? 3-Does "STABLE" OC exist?Thanks and GREETINGS!

Basically there are 2 parameters, voltage and temperature, as long as they are controlled there should be no problem, if at all with the board by forcing it or a breakdown due to the board's management (voltage spike, burnt socket...).
What exists? Look for your own configuration little by little and don't think about the smell of the clouds, I've already told you how to test stability.
PD: Don't go looking at extreme OCs because you're going to believe it's normal, go humbly and little by little.

+1 to Mr. Obione
The configuration that someone has on their E8500 doesn't necessarily have to work for you, even if you have the same components exactly the same mounted. Each micro, board, memory... is a world, there are no two identical ones, and some go up more and others less, some fit better and others worse.
Indeed, don't go looking for extreme overclocks to motivate yourself with yours, you will probably end up frustrated when you see that it doesn't go very far or it burns out before you realize...
Little by little, testing and when stability is compromised there you have your limit and your configuration.Regards

Alright guys;D,when I get the graphics card... I'll format the computer and start overclocking.. using coretemp for temperatures and prime95 for 8 hours straight to verify and give the final verdict... at first I'll put the memory at the minimum to be able to overclock calmly and then you'll have to help me with the voltage and how to configure the ram latencies properly to get everything perfect because I have no idea about that
I'll tell you about the type of memory I have:

1000MHz DDR2
5-5-5-18(CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS)
Available in 4GB (2x2048MB) Dual Channel Kits
Unbuffered
OCZ Lifetime Warranty
2.1 Volts
240 Pin DIMM -
Technically, when you overclock, you are taking "life" away from the micro, simply because you are raising the temperatures and voltages (heat resistance of components) through the network for a review of a "Chinese" who buys micros by weight, overclocks them one by one and only keeps the best ones (to beat world overclocking records). As I think you are not from that "field", start slowly and think about what you want the overclock for
to pass tests or to play or to …. As a rule: the higher the performance, the shorter the life. Remember Blade Runner. What kind of candle do you want to have?

With a good heatsink, those micros came out very good, my second E8400 I've scraped a few mhz more now it's at 4.140 mhz with 1.26-1.28 v and in idle it's at 38 º, and that's with my heatsink being a bit mediocre, it starts to raise FSB, without raising voltage, and do stress tests with orthos, stress prime, to see how far it goes, then it's time to touch a bit of voltage, raise voltages to the FSB of the micro... PATIENCE, but you're sure to get 3.600 mhz for sure..
PD. before your micro dies you'll surely have changed platforms, so make the most of that E8500, you'll see how you notice that extra power..
