A report from Associated Press announces that Megaupload is shutting down and its workers have been charged. There is no more information at the moment beyond that the site is not working. We will constantly update with new information. Rodrigo Aguiar, one of the founders of @BreakingNews, currently working at CNN Mexico comments on the same information.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the FBI has charged seven people working at Megaupload with online piracy, apparently four of them have been arrested in New Zealand.

Part of the press release from the United States Department of Justice, is in English, but the three key points are:

Two companies have been charged, Megaupload Limited and Vestor Limited.
The charges include money laundering and organized crime.
The maximum penalty facing the accused individuals is up to 20 years in prison for organized crime, 5 years for conspiracy to infringe copyright, 20 years for participating in money laundering practices and 5 more for substantial copyright infringement charges.

I hope many of you didn't have lifetime premium…

      now more than ever

P.D.: if there really were workers guilty of what they are accused of, lock them up, but it doesn't seem right that a company of this caliber globally would be involved in these shenanigans, does it?

This news, along with this other one seems to indicate that the pieces are moving.

I don't know if those responsible for MU have laundered money, but in any case, what does that concern the US? This company is based in Hong Kong, so if there has been fraud, it will have been in China, right?

On the other hand, being a Chinese company, we will have to see what happens. I don't think they will just sit back and do nothing because MU is not exactly a small fry.

I suppose the SOPA issue was coincidental, but I don't quite understand how the US can control this company (the FBI doesn't have jurisdiction outside the country and China is not exactly the greatest ally of the Western power); they just have to change their ISP to continue providing service to the rest of the world.

Honestly, I don't quite understand the issue.

It's a damn shame, on the one hand I'm relieved that I didn't renew the subscription that expired last month and had appetizing prices of 2 years at the price of one, and now what happens to my private content that I have stored?

          Oh dear.

the issue is that with the USA having control over domains, seizing megaupload.com, megavideo.com, mega*.com is fine for them, even if the company is based on the moon, that's what happens when you let one country legislate globally

Something must be done against these imperialists, I say. Burning containers doesn't seem to work, but this can't continue like this. Between this and the global crisis, it's like crumbs that are piling up to make a big mess.

I still had a few months of premium left, but the truth is that it was downloading little to nothing, lately I only use torrents, although it is true that today at noon I downloaded a little movie that a colleague asked me for ;D and it downloaded as always.
We'll see how the issue evolves if it evolves

Let's see if at least the megamanager works, but it all depends on where everything is stored, of course.

First for the pain in the ass they just did to me, that I had a couple of premiums active and I live off megavideo :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

And second because I had heard the news about an hour ago or more and was preparing the post, when cunningly my internet stopped working as it sometimes does and until RIGHT NOW… (I think it's going for a separate branch because I'm already...)

Well, as I was saying, it's a pain in the ass and they've done me in big time.
If you're planning to demonstrate to burn things or something like that, let me know.

Something strange was going on at MU, the company was making a lot of money and if the FBI gets involved, something big must have happened.

P.D. Personally, I don't care, although it has to be said that they go and close it down just now that they had renovated it and it was working very well, with hardly any waiting or advertising… :sadgirl:

P.D.2. You didn't want SOPA, so here are two problems :risitas:
