Non-original battery for digital reflex
-
Hello. I want to buy a battery for my Olympus E. The original battery is 7.2 V, 1150 mAh and costs 60€.
The thing is that the batteries that are not original are very cheap on eBay and are also 2000 mAh (¡2 batteries for 15€ G.I.!). The problem is that they are 7.4 V. Obviously the sellers assure that they are compatible, but can the camera be damaged by those extra 0.2 V?
Thank you.

If it is Lithium, there is usually a difference between the nominal and the real charge. It can have a nominal 7.2v and, when newly charged, go over 7.5v.
For example, the 18650 (those from laptops) have a nominal charge of 3.7v, but when newly charged, they reach 4.2v.Normally, the devices that use them must tolerate a similar current variation (for the account that it brings them) or a much higher one in case of batteries in series.

The problem is that on the sticker of the original one it says 7.2 and on the one of the "fake" one it says 7.4, that is, those are the voltages that you call nominal. If there is a difference of "X" volts or a "Y" percent, that variation I suppose will be added to that voltage.

I would say that there is no danger.
I have an old Reflex, a Canon 350D with two pirate batteries and one original. Both are 7.4V but have different mAh. The same thing happens to me with the Panasonic LX5 or the TZ7 that I also have. They are the same V on the sticker... and then it's a lie... but the reality is that I don't buy an expensive battery when on Ebay for that price I can buy 4-6... and although the pirates usually last less despite indicating that they have more mAh... the reality is that they work very well.
In summary I have 3 cameras with their original batteries and with a couple of batteries bought on Ebay and as if nothing.
If you have doubts you can consult in photography forums like OjoDigital, there are very nice people who know a lot.
