Free disk space on the system
-
Hello, I wanted to ask you a question. I already have the new PC, and when I installed W7 Ultimate 64b on the Crucial M4 SSD of 128Gb, without installing any programs yet, I only have 49gb free on the disk according to Windows, looking at "Computer".
But if I go into the disk and select all the folders that are inside, including the hidden ones, I only have 43 gigabytes occupied…
I don't know what's going on. Is this normal?... It's that with the home version it doesn't happen like that, and I don't know if it's that the Ultimate reserves space or whatever. I've looked and there are no hidden partitions or anything. I don't know where that difference comes from between what the folders inside the disk really occupy and what the system says they occupy. In the windows disk manager it doesn't show any hidden partition or anything. I've looked around a lot to see where that difference might come from, and there's no way. I repeat that there's no software installed yet.
It's that from the 43gb that the folders that contain the disk give me, to the 70gb that Windows tells me in "Computer" that I have free, there's a big difference.I've formatted 3 times, and the issue is still the same, there's no way. Let's see if you can help me.
Regards.

Disable hibernation if you have it enabled and recovery, also reduce the paging file leaving it between 2 and 4GB, a colleague had the same problem, it consumes much more than my Ultimate 32 bits but well, you will get something because it will have created a paging file with all the RAM, which is not little. I already told you that my colleague has also set up 32GB with the M4 of 128.
Go to computer - properties - advanced settings. There you have 2 configurations, in advanced options performance (advanced tab, virtual memory) and in System protection where you can delete the points and disable it but make an image of the System, if it is with a dedicated software that you have under control it is better than the one from Windows it is crap speaking in silver xD and if it is the Acronis 2012 deluxe, it aligns everything but it is paid.

Great response Obinone!!
2 doubts that arise when reading you:
When you say "hibernation and recovery", is it the same thing or are they two configurations?
With 32 Gb of RAM, can I completely cancel the paging file?Regards.

Better not to remove pagination, some programs appreciate it and others need it, besides it comes in handy for a memory dump so if you usually eat 4GB with more or less important tasks better to leave it at 4GB.
They are different things. To disable hibernation:
Start - Write in the search box "cmd", run as admin if you have UAC activated and run the command "powercfg.exe /hibernate off". To activate it change off to on.

The only thing I changed was that I removed hibernation from all disks, the rest is as Windows put it.

Many thanks for your great clarifications Obione, but what about "the most important tasks consume like 4GB", how do you know that, by experience? I understand that you could not put less.
Regards.

Well, depending on what you do, you will consume more or less, but I haven't eaten 3GB by being an ass. Make it a variable if you want, although I would leave it fixed. Either way, between 2 and 4GB would be the way to go.
