Doubt about the graphics capability of a laptop

Hello,
I have a laptop with a gt520m nvidia 1gb but 64 bus and that's where my question comes in. If I connect an external monitor 21.5 inches fullhd, my idea of the second monitor is to use it as a second desktop for documents and watching movies. I'm worried that the resolution might bring down the card or simply not work (oh yes, the screen is via vga)
If it doesn't work, any solution?
P.D: Every time I like laptops less…..
