MTB Bicycle - Budget 500-600

Good morning, as I know that there are several of you who practice this sport, I would like you to recommend an MTB for me to start in this sport.

Of the ones I have seen so far, the CANYON YELLOWSTONE 4.0 is the one that seems to me the most complete in terms of components and aesthetics. According to what they say, the 2012 ones go down in price around this time because of the release of the 2013 ones, but of the ones I have seen on the internet, none had the components of the canyon and the price was similar.

The canyon comes out for 569 + shipping (40e I think) although 2 days ago it was at 529.

In second hand I have not found anything interesting, at least of what I have seen. My size is an M I think, although I have to measure myself to see exactly what size I have.

What do you think of the canyon? Any alternative to this? Any advice or help is appreciated.

I, as always, recommend visiting a shop-workshop, of which you can easily find recommended in specialized forums. If possible, accompanied by a friend who knows about components, to negotiate better and more quickly.

In these establishments, in addition to receiving the best recommendations, with a view to becoming your usual repair place, they usually have older bicycles, but in good condition, that other customers deliver, as part of the payment for a new one.

Well, I'll have to start looking in stores, because in the forums they recommend the Canyon Yellowstone 4.0 - 569 euros, or a Sherpa 2012 - 510 euros, or a Radon ZR Team 6.0 - 609 euros.

I think the CANYON has good components, even though I don't know much, but the DEORE XT gears are good, right? And the brakes don't seem bad either. I can't really say about the rest.

With this crisis, whether to maximize profits, or the excuse they want to give you, the fact is that from one year to another, the components go down in range, and the prices not only do not go down, but they go up <:( The three bikes you put are very similar, and what one loses in a component, it carries better in another. Personally I would set the bar at least at ~700€, where you have the Yellowstone 5.0, Rockrider 8.1, Orbea Satellite... and the issue of financing to sweeten the deal, or I would look in recommended stores-workshop something of mid-high range from 2008-2009 for 400-550€ Salu2!

Hello everyone.

victorpexacos, I have a 2006 version Merida Matts Miami with disc brakes that I'm thinking about selling although it's not 100% sure. If you're interested, let me know and I'll give it some thought ;).

It's not a marvel (the best part is the 9-speed cassette, Deore XT gears, and discs) but it's a good option for beginners. The treatment I've given it has been exclusively city.

The Cubes usually have adjusted prices, and that LTD comes equipped like the ones at ~700€ that I mention above, maybe a little better and a little heavier, but in the end the price is the most important thing, right?

Well, I'm still looking for an MTB, and a friend has offered me a Rockrider 9.2 from 2009. The bike has been used quite a bit, but it still works well.

I have it at my house, so I can test it as long as I need. Today I'm going to take it to get it adjusted, since it had been sitting for a while and the gears aren't changing well, etc.

Once I have it adjusted, what do you think I should look for? How to check that the bike is in decent condition?

The bike is a dual suspension, RockShox Revelation fork, Ario 2.1 rear suspension; XT rear derailleur, Deore LX shifters, LX derailleur and not much else.

The bike is my size, which is why I'm really interested in whether the bike is good or not, but I don't know how to check suspensions and other components. Anyway, on Saturday I'll take it to a store to have it checked and tell me what has the most wear, so I can negotiate the price.

Without negotiating, he's selling it for 450, but I hope to get it down a bit, in case any component replacement is needed.

Look closely at the frame, especially the welding areas, for any cracks or repainting that might be covering them up. Check the front fork's operation while standing still, and then lock it and ride a bit like a BMX, to hear what creaks. Then check the rear fork positions.

The bad tongues, they say, that in that model the front fork could give you some trouble, and that the gears shift easily due to the range of rotation on the handlebars :mudo:

Anyway, unless you see something on the frame or the fork is already worn, it's not a bad price, although if you get it for 400€, better

In the end I kept the bike. I've been out 4 times and the bike behaves well, it hasn't given me any problems. But now I have muuuch questions ;D:

• Cleaning and lubrication of the transmission. How should I clean the transmission?

According to what I've read, to not harm the components, it's best to wash them with hot water and soap and brush the chain, derailleur and cassette; rinse, dry and degrease and lubricate. But… What product do I degrease with? What oil should I use?

While the MTB experts decide to go through the post, I take the opportunity to share my opinion with you.

As for cleaning, except for rides where you get muddy up to your ears, you only need to clean the bike a little with water, and avoid leaving the areas that require lubrication too dry, or getting grease on the brake discs.

Once the bike is dry, a few drops of grease on the cassette and chain, and ready to store (I use the Finish Line )

The squeaking when you brake with wet pads is completely normal :sisi:

The helmet, just make sure it's not too "low cost", and that you feel comfortable with it, or you'll end up throwing it in a ditch ;D

What you say about the flat tire, is because you probably have a slow puncture, so either you take off the wheel to change the inner tube and take the opportunity to check that the tire doesn't have a "prize" in the form of a thorn, or you wait to puncture more and remember to put air in, before each ride.

The Decathlon inner tubes are perfectly valid, although they used to be cheaper :ffu:, but you can put an inner tube with anti-puncture liquid, or save up to switch to tubeless, as the Pros will recommend :troll:

As for the oil, I've seen that there are many from finish line. I live in Alicante, so I think I'll get the SECO one, since I usually don't go out when there's mud or rain, and it also says it picks up less dust.

I found it at Mammoth for 6.60e for the 120ml:

And as for the helmet, I don't know what to do, whether to get one from Decathlon, or go to a store to see what they have there. I don't know what the Decathlon ones are like; and not much else.

The helmets from Decathlon don't look bad, but as Fassou says, good and comfortable, if you don't you'll stick it anywhere. And always, always with the helmet. When you're not used to it it's annoying, but it can save your life.
Get yourself a pair of long gloves, not those with fingers in the air. Yes, they get hot, but with a double you'll go down harder and if you fall with your fingers in the air you'll see what a laugh, or if you go with a branch or similar on your fingers (experience).
I also recommend that if you want the suspensions to go softer, don't go directly to the pivot points of the rear end like a beast, but just enough to take the beast out and then "softlyyyy" and put 2 drops of oil on it, just like on the shock absorber and fork seal. What's left over you remove with a cloth. Same with all the moving parts of the bike: gear shifters, gears, make sure it has grease on the seat post so that water doesn't get in there, and never let a drop of oil fall on the discs-pads. If not, in the trash.

And about oils, in summer use the dry one, but if it rains use the other more liquid, which penetrates more and gets the water out. And although it catches less dust, if you go out with dust you have to put it on more often. It disappears. Same with water.

Well, I think I have everything clearer now...

Basic equipment:

• A good and comfortable helmet. I'll try a few.
• Long gloves, I suppose with protections.
• Some glasses, although you could recommend some to me ;D
• And as for the oil, I'll buy one that's dry and if I can, another one that's wet.

Regarding the glasses, for the first ones I recommend that you try the normal ones with interchangeable lenses, that you find them comfortable, and then later, when you get tired of them or break them ;D, you buy something of higher quality, with the shape and colors that you like. In my case, I like the yellow lenses

Well guys, on Friday I went to Decathlon and got some equipment that I really needed:D:

• Sport 7 BTWIN helmet, comfortable, light, cheap and it matches the donkey xD.

• Black DECATHLON 3 culotte:

• Kalenji backpack:

• A couple of cameras, an inflator and degreaser.

I think I didn't forget anything, I spent 97 euros in total and I'm really happy with the purchase, everything is comfortable and light and it fits me like a glove

By the way, what pressure should the wheels have? The guy who sold it to me said around 2-2.5 in the front and 2.5-3 in the back.
