A bug has been discovered in the Linux Netlink service that can allow a user to gain administrator privileges on the machine silently. The affected kernel versions are from 3.3 to 3.8, both inclusive.

The recommendation for those using Ubuntu 12.10 is to switch to the previous 12.04 until they fix said vulnerability… well, if it's a critical system, for a company or something like that, then yes, but in my case, it's not going to be (Mint 14 is based on Ubuntu 12.10) if I'm not mistaken.

According to what I have understood, the vulnerability is only practicable by users with an account in the system.
It seems to me very serious although difficult to exploit.

Well, things like this always appear in all systems.
I think they are going to release a patch to block the vulnerability by disabling some service.
Anyway, I'm not worried, not even on the server. All sensitive material is always on a disk outside the tower that is only connected when necessary and to the AIR, so...
