Let's see if you can help me out, I'm looking for a wifi router that gives me signal on two floors, about 6 or 7 devices will connect via wifi (phone, tablet, a couple of laptops, desktop, console and wifi printer) the thing is that with the one from telefonica I'm not getting anywhere.

Any recommendations, you know something good, nice and cheap. Thank you very much ?

I almost always recommend PLC+alternative access point when there are several floors or long distances in mind. Especially because if you cried a little to telefonica they would give you the plc and a normal access point is very cheap.

That's what I wanted, but since we're talking about independent apartments, I had heard that there's no signal from the PIA to the back. Otherwise, I would have to wire it up, which I'm really not looking forward to, and since there's a good light court, my idea is to have the router there and get a signal.

ah, I thought the "two floors" were ground floor and first floor lol not two independent ones...

Well the best thing is that you throw a good ethernet cable if you want the speed to stay decent...
Could you make a paint with a scheme? xD because if the distance is too great, no matter how powerful the router is, you're going to have an unstable connection.
I don't know what router you have right now, but maybe buying a directional antenna with a lot of db is enough. (or making it...)

It's the comtrend router that comes with telefonica and to change the antenna I would have to disassemble it because it doesn't come with a screw, that's why I didn't mind buying a decent one with wifi N so I could do streaming, connect a USB drive and so on, and above all that it has good signal.

Well this is a small building I have my "office" set up upstairs and besides I'm going to let some "neighbors" hog my wifi total that right now with this router in the patio de luces more or less it gives coverage but it only reaches some devices for example now I'm on the 4th floor with the macbook and it's going well but the desktop, which is next to it, doesn't get a signal and that even though it has a decent antenna… So I imagine that with a good router I will have enough signal if not I will have to walk around with access points and cable through LAN ?

Well, you have done it, you put a repeater in the window of the other floor and that's it, it will give a signal to the whole floor.

If that's what I thought, the fact is that I tried a couple and they don't work very well, buying a good one (that allows me to repeat the signal with another network name and on another channel, so as not to ruin the quality of the original signal, and that is powerful) are 60€ and buying a router with more features are about 100€... hence the dilemma.

I have never been a big fan of wifi repeaters, they have never given me very good results.

I suppose you have been with the comtrend rubbish for a long time. If I were you, I would sabotage it, now they are installing zyxel p660hw-d1 with interchangeable antennas, it is a great router, especially if you get rid of the movistar firmware, it gives me much more performance than the comtrend and perhaps that extra is worth it and you won't spend money on anything.. to try...

                    PD: good new avatar ?

Mmm I think I have some Zyxel like that, I'll try it to see how it goes.

PD. Haha I just updated to Fedora 18 and it gave me the wink ?

Note that not all zyxels are good. The one that has worked best for me is the model I showed you. You will comment on how it is.
At first glance, you will see that the zyxel has a larger and interchangeable antenna.

PD: you have given me the urge to change my avatar and I just made one with pixelmator in a somewhat crappy way lol

With the trendnet I bought, it reaches up to the portal and there are 3 floors XD, but the best and most economical, as they tell you, is a repeater.

The Tecnho is just a router. The modem routers we have are not especially good at coverage. They perform well, but they do not stand out for having exaggerated coverage.

It's not worth buying an ADSL router for the WiFi, if you already have one from the ISP.

Listen to me, and buy a "neutral" router and connect it to the Comtrend (which you disable the WiFi on), and put something like TP-Link TL-WR1043ND or the TRENDnet that Kynes recommends.

                                  Regards!

I should mention that I ended up changing the ADSL location and also installed a PLC for the TV. And right now I'm waiting for Asus to release something AC with gigabit and modem, I'm sick of the devices that timofonica gives away, they're useless for torrent downloads with more than 100 connections they slow down.

Well, in the end the other day I went to the MM and bought a normal modem-router: Linksys X3500

Let's see how it goes, it's to get by and have a giga network and an adsl with which I can download a couple of torrents at the same time. As I try it out I'll tell you how it goes.

Well, in the end I made a compulsive purchase at the MM because the Telefonica device was really annoying me, and I bought a modem-router. Now my ADSL works better with P2P downloads, and it also allows connection to a modem in case I add cable in the future, and the router's features are like those of the TRENDnet dual-band N 750, 4 gigabit ports, and a USB. The only downside is that it has internal antennas, but the truth is that the coverage it gives is very good.

I bought it basically because I found it in a store where for the rest you already know that you pay a little more than if you order it separately, and the brand is good, but they charge you extra for the Cisco label as well. But anyway, I'm happy, it works perfectly.
