They gave me an HP dx2300 PC without memory or disk. It had some DDR2 memory (it takes DDR2) PC2 3200 taken from a P4. The machine did not turn on. In the online manual for that HP model, it says it takes PC2 5300 to 677 MHz, and that the system will not start if it has the wrong type of memory. Could that be why it won't turn on?

Asrock's G31 board doesn't work if the memory is not higher than 667mhz. You're going to have to put it at 800 for sure, which comes out to the same as the 667 and maybe it can work asynchronously with the micro and you get some extra performance.

Not if he has already read this…. just asking. That's why my answer is brief.

            DIMM Modules
Up to two standard industry DIMM modules can be included in the system board memory sockets.
At least one DIMM module is preinstalled in these memory sockets. The sockets contain the labels DIMM1 and DIMM2. To achieve maximum memory performance, you can include up to 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) of memory in the system board.
            DDR2-SDRAM DIMM Modules
For proper system operation, DDR2-SDRAM DIMM modules must be:
            ● industry standard with 240 pins
            ● compatible with PC2-5300 667 MHz unbuffered
            ● DDR2-SDRAM DIMM modules of 1.9 volts
            DDR2-SDRAM DIMM modules must also:
            ● support CAS latency 4 (CL = 4) for PC2-5300 667 MHz
            ● contain the mandatory SPD information per JEDEC standards
            Additionally, the computer supports:
            ● non-ECC memory technologies of 256 Mbit, 512 Mbit, and 1 Gbit
            ● single or dual sided DIMM modules
            ● DIMM modules manufactured with DDR x8 and x16 devices; DIMM modules manufactured with
            SDRAM x4 are not compatible
NOTE: The system will not boot if you install incompatible DIMM modules.

No si él ya ha leído esto…. vamos que pregunta por preguntar. Por eso mi respuesta escueta.

That's what I read (it was in English). What I wasn't clear about was whether they were "recommendations" or mandatory minimum requirements. I'm going to get those memories and I'll let you know how it went.

                Here it says:
For the system to function correctly, the DDR2-SDRAM DIMM modules must be:
                ● industry standard with 240 pins
                ● compatible with PC2-5300 667 MHz unbuffered

these are not recommendations, it's just the way it is

The PC doesn't die because of slower memory, what happens with those memories is that they are registered and don't work on any computer, that they are 400 usually doesn't matter if you then raise them with more voltage they usually do 667 easily, even 800, I know this because I've had memories like that and they could be raised but they don't work with any motherboard, they usually didn't work for me on Asus, but they do work on a DFI, but they are HP brand memories, which they do so that you buy them from them more expensive.

                        Hewlett-Packard 397413-B21 - RAM Memory - for 181,5 €

it's better to buy another PC, rather than buying memory like that.

                        regards
