I would like to know why a 4K monitor costs more than a 4K graphics card.

For example, the most expensive 4K graphics card, the GTX Titan, costs between 999 and 1,400 euros depending on the model, and is capable of using a full 4K resolution (4096x2160). In contrast, the cheapest 4K monitor (3840 x 2160) that doesn't quite reach full 4K that I have found costs over 3,000 euros, which is like 3 Titans, and that's without even considering the "power" that comes with the graphics card.

Because outputting a 4k signal is relatively simple and only requires compliance with the HDMI 2.0 standard. In contrast, the 4k panels used on screen are too new, there are not many alternatives on the market and, above all, economies of scale have not yet been achieved, as manufacturing a 4k screen is much more complex than a HDMI 2.0 controller.

Ok, thanks for responding so quickly.
So it would be a case equivalent to PCIe SSDs, right?

I guess. It all depends on the run. HDMI 2.0 chips are starting to be put in everything, even in devices where 4k will never be used because they are produced in such quantities that they are cheap.

If 4k screens were produced in the same quantity, they would also be very cheap, but for this to happen there has to be a large demand since setting up a plant to produce is very expensive. It is simpler, faster and cheaper to put an integrated one into production than a device with different elements that are more complex like a screen.

This happens with everything. The other day I got into reading a computer magazine from 2000 and on the pages of ads, a store was promoting as a novelty the TFT screens for desktop computers. The size of the first screens was 15", they had a resolution of 1024x768 and their price was 95000 pesetas of the time (almost 600€ to which you would have to add inflation).

Today only TFTs are sold, they can be found for just over 80€ and their performance is superior to the first ones that were sold. The only reason this happens is that today the whole market is focused on TFT, they have huge runs and that reduces costs a lot.

In 10 or 12 years 4k screens will be mainstream devices that will be found for less than 100€ simply because they will be manufactured a lot.
