XFX GeForce 6800 XT Vs GF 8400 GS
-
Well I'm back to the forum after a few years somewhat neglected from the world… And I return with the silly question of the week.
Currently I have a 6800gt of 512 mg ddr3 with a NV6 heatsink. It's an old thing but well, I've been using the same PC since 2005 xD. The truth is that it's good but I think it's not running as it should because of rust (in Las Palmas the humidity of the sea wreaks havoc)
The thing is that I got myself an 8400gs of 256 mb that was going to be thrown away and I don't know if I should change it. It's newer but I don't know if it's more powerful and if the change is worth it.
I don't usually play much. The most powerful thing I use is WoW and the S. O. That I use is Linux. I removed ubuntu for Mint because with Unity the graphics were really bad.
What do I do. Change or stay with the 6800gt??
Regards!!

Don't ask silly questions, they are very even

It seems that in the 3DMark06, the 6800XT wins by little, although the 8400GS supports more modern technologies (DX10, SM4…), which can be an important improvement in low-demand applications.
You know what they say, if it works, better not touch it, but it's almost time for a hardware upgrade, isn't it?
Regards!

Thanks Fassou. I think I'll try the 8400 for a few days to see how it goes, since I think the 6800 is worn out because it doesn't work as it should.
P. D. In the blacksmith's house, they have a wooden knife, hehe

If you play little I would try the 8400, it will be cooler and consume less, but having both the best thing is to try and draw your own conclusions, it's the best way to check which one performs better.

Well, now I come along and say that the one you have, for the simple fact of having 512 MB of VRAM, will allow you to run games that cannot run with less memory (X3: Terran Conflict for example, will not install if you do not have at least 512 MB of VRAM.)
Despite having the same engine as the previous installment (X3 Reunion which I played with my now defunct RX9800 with 128MB) it did not allow me to even install it.
But anyway, if you say that yours is not working well, then you have no other choice. :smirk:
