Micro change
-
Hello everyone, I am considering the possibility of exchanging a Core 2 Duo E8400 for one of these two:
Quad core 2 duo Q9550
Quad core 2 duo QX9650
Both are second-hand. Is it worth it?
Regarding temperatures, would a special heatsink be necessary?
Thanks -
I would say that it is worth it, I had an E2180 that overclocked as well as an E8400 and I moved to a Q6600 that I have at 3.2 and the change was very big, both for office work and for gaming. Years ago when the first Quads came out there wasn't as much software that took advantage of so many cores, but today the situation is different and there is even software that takes advantage of more than 4 cores.
What I would say is how much the change costs you. Because if it costs you more than 70€, for about 40€ or a little more the Q6600 is sold second-hand, revision "GO" because the "B3" revision is worse. Most people overclock to 3.0-3.2 which is about 50% overclock since the micro goes from stock to 2.4 so yes, even today these micros perform well.
That said, you are going to need a good heatsink, but for not much money you have decent ones. Look for ones that are compatible with the socket 775, since some modern ones are not. Depending on whether you are going to overclock or not, we will recommend one or the other when you buy the micro. ;D I don't think it's feasible for a heatsink from a Dual Core like the E8400 to handle a Quad, unless you don't overclock or do intensive use.
Also, if you tell us what motherboard you have, we will know if you can mount any Quad and if you will be able to overclock it.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-EP43-UD3L with socket 775 and initially I had no idea about overclocking. As for the price, they are asking about 120 €. By the way, where do they sell the Q6600 for 40 €?

In a forum like hard2mano they are sold for about €40-50 but you need an invitation to enter. Look on Ebay for example. To pay €120 I would change platform, it will cost you a bit more but the change will last much longer. Example: Micro AMD FX 8320 €129 AMD FX 8320 - Processor (Socket AM3+, 3.5 GHz, AMD FX, 125 W): AMD: Amazon.es: Electronics Motherboard, this one is good and cheap €78: ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0 - Motherboard (DDR3-SDRAM, DIMM, dual, AMD, Socket AM3+, 4.8 GT/s): ASUS: Amazon.es: Computers Memory, 8 Gigas €64 Kingston HyperX KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX - RAM memory of 8 GB (2 x 4GB) PC3-12800 DDR3, 1600 MHz, 240-pin: KINGSTON: Amazon.es: Computers To this you subtract the selling your motherboard which you can get about €35, your micro about €30 and the memory, if it's DDR 2 800 to about €15 per 2 Gigas module, and if it's 4 Gigas or more the investment will have come out for about €200 or less, and believe me, it will be a good change without being too expensive. Buying a Quad Core for the 775 platform today makes sense if you don't spend too much, but paying €120 for a micro like this... there will be people who pay it, but for me it's not worth it. I just looked on Ebay and the Q6600 is sold for under €50... I would spend that, but not more. -
120€?
Save them for when you change platforms :sisi:
Bye!

Well yes, I think you are right in your comments, I will see if I can get a Q6600 for that price and if not I will stay as I am and think about changing the entire platform later
Thank you very much for your wise advice
