Sound and video card problem
-
My father-in-law has a PC assembled from parts and the sound is failing. The sound cuts out and at the same time the image fails. I think it has integrated sound and an Nvidia graphics card from five years ago or more. I'm sorry I can't provide more information. It sounds to me like the motherboard is the problem... Can anyone guide me?

I would do the following...
1 If it has integrated graphics...
-Disconnect the power supply and press the power button to release the charge.
-Uninstall the old graphics card and connect the screen to the integrated graphics, turn it back on.
-This ensures that it's not the graphics card that's failing.2 If the problem persists...
-Remove all RAM modules leaving only 1 in the main slot...(The largest module)
-Change the power supply to another equivalent.
-Reboot and test.3 If the problem persists...
-Check that everything is correct in the BIOS, it's recommended to set the BIOS to default and exit.
-Install AIDA64 or EVEREST in test mode (F8) and look for...
-Motherboard/Chipset/Northbridge and Southbridge (note them down and look for the drivers)
-Download the drivers.
-Uninstall the drivers you have installed from the integrated audio/video and reboot.
-Stop the driver installation if the OS auto-starts.
-Install the downloaded drivers.
-Reboot and test.4 If the problem persists...
-Copy the drivers to a USB drive.
-Copy all personal data to another HDD or DVD.
-Format and reinstall the OS, install the downloaded drivers as soon as the OS starts.
-Reboot and test.5 If the problem persists...
-Change the processor
6 If the problem persists...
-It's the motherboard, change it.

If you can't do step 1 and 2, go directly to 3.
Specify a little what operating system you have, and the machine it is with its components so that I can better understand the problem you have.
Also detail a little more the sound and image losses, and if when you get a blue screen with a message when they are lost or simply stays black, as if the screen was turned off.
The main problem is the video error, the sound is secondary.
It sounds more like a software/driver/controller or corrupt OS problem to me.
Best regards.

It would be interesting to know what hardware we are working with.
