AMD Sempron 2800+ vs Intel Pentium 4 Northwood
-
Hello, I have these two platforms (Intel 478 and AMD 462), and I just wanted to know which one you would recommend I build.
Here is a comparison of both:
Compare Intel Pentium 4 2 GHz / AMD Sempron 2800+ (Thoroughbred)
Thanks and goodbye;D

According to the link, the Pentium 4 is at 2Ghz, so the Sempron is clearly superior. Now, the possibility of finding a Pentium 4 micro at 2.8 or 3Ghz in socket 478 is veryyyy high, there are plenty of them, so it would also depend on the possibilities of expansion.

Better 478… If it were 754 I would choose the AMD, but the 462 is a bit behind and the 478 micros are everywhere, you can play with that and put one of the most powerful at 3.2Ghz or similar.

If you could provide us with the extras from both platforms, like the motherboard and such. So we can also see depending on the chipset, that in 478 the best was always the Intel chipset, which is what they work best with. And then we can see which processor to mount, as our colleague Sylver says, a 3.2Ghz and more if it could be a Northwood (cooler than Prescott) and a good heatsink, it would fly compared to that Sempron.

Well, let's see, the Intel motherboard is a BIOSTAR P4TDP FURY 533, Chipset 845/ICH2 P4TDP :: Motherboard :: BIOSTAR

And the AMD motherboard is an Asrock K7VT6 Chipset KT600 ASRock > K7VT6

I am using 2 DDR400 memory modules of 256mb and little more information I can give you.
Regarding the AMD processing, its frequency is 2ghz according to cpu-world. I do not know if that data will be correct or not.

I insist on 478, it is a tougher platform according to my experience, although that board is not exactly a marvel, but you can easily put a P4 at 3.2 ghz, you will find it more easily than a better processor 462.

512Mb of RAM is little, even for XP. At work I use a P4 3 Ghz with HT and 2Gb of RAM and the truth is that in XP it moves very well, even browsing with several tabs, however I had an Athlon XP +2400 much lazier when browsing.
As for the boards the only important difference is that the AMD one has SATA and the Intel one does not.
For the rest I also prefer 478, but the SATA thing is to keep in mind.

Now I have the P4 assembled and I have installed WattOs, with a RAM consumption of 64MB and browsing and all that works well.
It's not going to be a computer with much use.
What I don't like about the Intel motherboard is that it only has two USBs and one is broken, and the front ones of the tower I don't know where to connect them, because on the motherboard it's not clear where they go and in some places I've tried they haven't worked, so I don't know if it's the fault of the external USBs or the motherboard.
Greetings and thanks for the opinions.
Edit: I have raised the FSB frequency to 120MHZ, achieving a CPU speed of 2.4ghz. For now with the browser open with youtube it holds up.

The thing is, that motherboard is a bit/quite bad… But hey, you can always put a USB multiplier on it, if you're not going to use it for extreme purposes, it will be fine. Also, be careful with that discreet overclocking, don't worry if it becomes unstable very soon. Best regards
