The question is whether anyone knows a 2 x 4gb ddr3 memory combination that works smoothly on this motherboard and without the need for tinkering, just plug it in and it's ready.

Sorry, but according to the motherboard manual, that book that comes with the board, it does not accept more than 4 GB in DDR3.

Alright, alright, so that's out of the way.
Modules that, from what I've read around, "work" (note the quotation marks) on the Asus P5KC are the Transcend JetRam DDR3 4 GB PC RAM (JM1600KLN-4G), supporting 2*4 GB.
My recommendation: pay attention to the manual.
If you can afford it, then try it, it might just work.;D
