Graphic advice

Hello everyone:

In February I bought my rig, I was initially going to buy the graphics card too, but in the end, having to renew monitor, speakers, printer… my budget got a bit out of hand and I decided to buy it a bit later and with the hope that prices would drop, a mistake because the one I was initially going to buy GTX970 is now more expensive than ever :facepalm:

With the new AMD cards I'm a bit lost, but from what I've read the GTX 970 is still superior to equivalent cards from this brand, I'm talking about cards like the R9 290 or R9 290X, with the 390 I already have doubts, plus there's the issue of drivers and temperatures which seems to be no contest.

I wonder if you can shed some light on which graphics card to buy and whether I should get it now or wait a few more months.

By the way, another "problem" is about my power supply, I bought it believing it was a pretty decent power supply, I've started reading a bit and oh boy, there's a gem, there are lots of complaints about the darn power supply and on top of that it seems that many fail with cards like these, even with plenty of watts to spare. Although, in the worst case, I wouldn't have much choice but to use the RMA.

Well, the truth is that selling that power supply and buying a new one of quality wouldn't hurt you (Corsair, Seasonic, OCZ...).

Regarding the graphics card, it depends on the use you want to give to the computer and the budget you have. Seeing that you were testing the 970, it seems that you want to play and run raw graphics at full speed, so you will have no choice but to lose performance for not paying the 330€ that the 970 is worth. This would imply going down even from the R9 290, which is at a similar price.

Since I have the necessary connectors for a 970 (8+6), I grab the graphics card and only if the source really doesn't work, I would change the source.

Going for a Radeon… think it over. They suffer from poorly optimized drivers, more than questionable efficiency and prices that are not sky-high either. That said, most models support DX12.

The problem I have with the power supply is that it is still under warranty since the PC is from February, in case of any problem I would use the warranty, many times at PCcomponentes they give the option that in case of any problem of this type, they offer you another power supply and you pay the difference, or they tell you that it may be the case :wall:, but we will change the power supply if necessary, I would always do it outside of warranty.

As for the budget for the graphics card, I would not spend more than 350 euros, although if it can be less then better. It is clear that I would like a graphics card that performs full in games and with the view that it will last me a few years.

I have also been looking at some second-hand GTX970 with warranty still in effect for about 270-280 euros but of course I am reluctant to pay a lot of money for something that you don't truly know how it is and new in my opinion is currently inflated to the max.

Regarding DX12, won't the current models of Nvidia support it? will this make a big difference in the future?

I put that note there to say something that wasn't completely negative about current Radeons.
As of today, there is no GPU that is fully compatible with certain DX12 features (asynchronous shaders and conservative rasterization), the nuance is that nVidia solves this compatibility with software patches, while according to AMD, they have GPUs that do support it natively by hardware.

With this clarified, how many current games are based on DX12? For those who care that their graphics fully comply with this standard, the best thing they can do is wait for the next generation of graphics.

Regarding your problem, given the above, you can choose between continuing as you are and waiting for the release of new models to lower the price of previous ones, or getting a 970.

That said, keep in mind that this is how it is: you buy something and a few months later something better comes out.:wall:

Personally, I prefer a 970 and enjoy my equipment to its fullest, rather than staying with the integrated one waiting for the bus. ;D

You are right about DX12, there is nothing, my choice right now would be to buy a GTX970 but I think it is quite expensive at the moment, I will look to see if there is any offer or promotion that is worth it in the short term, Black Friday is just around the corner and they usually have good offers, I will also look at the second-hand market to see if there is something worth it, if not then I will have to spend the euros.

By the way, regarding the assembler for the GTX970, which one do you prefer?

I recently got an alienware with a GTX960 2Gb. I've been playing Witcher 3 and GTA 5 without any problem at 1080p. you won't play at ultra but at high…
