We are going to try to liven this up a bit, let's talk about the new graphics from Nvidia and AMD that are making so many rivers of ink flow in different media. It seems that nVIDIA is rushing the release of the GTX1060 (whose performance is yet to be seen, we already know they tend to overstate it ), to curb the damage that the pricing of the new RX480 and RX470 could do to them.

And on the other hand, there are comments from users saying that they have damaged their cards, specifically some PCI-Express slots and sound connections, after plugging in the new AMD graphics cards.

Do you think these are malicious rumors? Or is it more likely that the opinions pointing to the "improvable" design of some cards, which allows them to exceed the limit of the specifications (75W), are more plausible?

From AMD, of course, they have already come out to say that they are investigating it.

        Cheers!

I add the article on PC Perspective, comparing the problem with a similar one detected on the Asus GTX960 Strix

            Hello:

Well, I think the nvidia are bad beasts. But just like the rx480, I also read that the 1080 had problems, but I can't remember where.
The cards that die is the same thing that happened with the skylake and the thin pcb they had. Everything new can fail. It doesn't matter how many tests you do, you can always find new ones.
And I think they are graphics cards that, for the price they have, are not bad at all. Sure, they are not a 1080 or a 1070, but they do the job. I don't buy that they are at the same price as the 970, with their 3.5+0.5. For me, they have come out with a pretty capable graphics card for the price it has, with 8gb at 280€.
They have improved manufacturing, consumption, size. We'll see what happens with the Vega.

The power supply of the RX480 I imagine will also have to do with the manufacturer's implementation, the same is just a problem with the reference models. To give an example close to me, my GTX750 in theory has a TDP of 55w, however the assembler (Gigabyte) has equipped it with additional power supply, I imagine that it is better to be safe than sorry.

That said, and as you rightly comment Garfield, with each new thing that comes out there is a risk of paying the rookie fee and over time they are polished. I am always in favor of waiting a while and buying something more proven, but I understand that many people like to try the most modern or even do reviews, and thanks to them others can get to know the product better before diving in.

We will have to wait for the tests we do with those graphics, to see how far they go. They say that the fix will be for drivers. I don't know how, but that's what I've heard, and that in some models they have reached to consume 86w from the pcie, and I think it's more because they have created or would be compatible with pcie 2.0. There I think that's where the error is.

                Greetings

I don't know what will happen when they improve them, but the price difference between AMD and NVIDIA is beastly

Until the 1060 arrives, they are rushing to release it and I think it will make AMD cry.

They are all having some teething problems, nothing out of the ordinary. I think part of AMD's mess is due to cheap reference models, let's see when decent customs come out around 300 euros. I suppose they will get a little closer to the 1060 and make it attractive via price (250€ compared to 300€ for a 1060 for example, talking about customs of course).

To me, the AMD 480 seems like a correct graphics card for the price it has. It's also true that I think the model that's worth it is the 4 Gigas, not the 8 if you play in Full HD and not at higher resolution. When the 4 Gigas model with a good cooler comes out, it will be an appetizing graphics card, for those who want a decent graphics card, without being a top of the range, that is not extremely expensive.

There are people who complain that say the 480 is not for that much, I suppose it's the people who had an Nvidia 970 GTX that before they sold it second-hand for 300€ and now they can't sell it for 200€ (in hard2mano it's like that) or the people who like monopolies, because for me the new Nvidia range is not that expensive, it's the price that is insulting. Even the price of the 1060 can be high and exceed 300€ by much.

The price of the 1080 seems brutal to me and the 1070's too. Unless you are a super gamer and have money to spare (mind you, I don't criticize anyone who spends that on a graphics card, everyone can do what they want with their money). But I remember other Nvidia top of the range that were worth about half of what they are worth now, and not so many years ago.

By the way, the 1060 is rumored to come capped to mount SLI, not to mention that they will be 3 or 6 Gigas models. 3 Gigas in some games may be short, and 6... we'll have to see the surcharge.

I miss the time when you could buy a graphics card in this range for 200€ or less, not to mention the 1080-1070 that for what they are worth you can build a great gaming PC.

Not so many years ago, if you remember, AMD models were sold, the 5850 Xtreme in PC components refurbished model, for about 90-100€. It was a marvel to spend that money and know that you had a decent graphics card for current games. It wasn't a powerhouse, but for that price it turned out to be super appetizing. Today there are no such deals.

In summary, competition is good. AMD had graphics cards similar to the 970 GTX at slightly lower prices. Now they have released a similar graphics card, that consumes less and is cheaper. Well, I think it's not bad at all. When new models come out, I suppose they will put two power connectors on some, to avoid current problems, they will put decent fans and not the turbine one, and we will have to see if the surcharge of the 1060 over the 480 is worth it.
