As announced in their press release, the semiconductor manufacturing company has announced the start of production of the new generation of 12 nm process technology based on FD-SOI (fully depleted silicon on insulator). This process promises yields similar to the 10 nm FinFET process, with better power consumption and lower cost than the 16 nm FinFET.

As a step to get into gardens, here the process is explained in detail.

The process is estimated to be completed by 2019…
...so what does this have to do with AMD?

Well, for those who don't know, GlobalFoundries is a partner of AMD, and to summarize a lot, it turns out that this process, which replaces the 22 nm one, will be much earlier than the 7 nm FinFET, which according to the latest news could be delayed until 2022.

We can extrapolate that, as long as AMD tightens up and manages the profits of the Polaris and future Zen properly, things would have to go very wrong for them not to become a benchmark again in the next decade; becoming the pioneers of 12 nm technology in commercial processors.

Note: Remember that FinFET comes from Fin Field Effect Transistor, nothing to do with a bounty hunter from Kamino.

The latest news about AMD reminds me of Formula 1, where it is always announced that in a couple of years McLaren will be almost on a par with Mercedes, and the truth is that little by little they are improving, will this also be the case for AMD but all of a sudden with this generation and even more so in the following ones thanks to the new process? I didn't used to follow the news about micros, but the latest ones are starting to excite me.
