Well, as a matter of consultation, for a team of those that are usually assembled for gaming; namely i7 6700, 16 GB RAM, SSD+HDD and the graphics card of the moment, why do you need a B150 or an H170?
My opinion is that if the user is not going to perform OC, their thing is an H110, and otherwise, a Z170.

Am I very off base? ?

I see that the Hxxx don't have OC option …. so if you don't do it it's something absurd to go for a Zxxx,
        unless you need Multi GPU...
        The H have a PCIe 16x slot....

Regarding the B150... I just found out that it exists :eoh:

Something important is that neither the B150 nor the H110 supports Vpro... in case someone needs it....

        So yes.
I totally agree with you <:(

Now it is convenient in the mid-to-high range to consider an M2 connection or, failing that, that when we connect something to the second PCI Express, the speed to the graphics port does not decrease.
Man does not live on graphics alone.

For a gaming rig, I wouldn't buy anything without VRM dissipation, I usually recommend B150M mATX boards, you can get them from 80 euros. The one that doesn't come with M.2 is the ASrock Pro4. With a MSI Bazooka Plus, you can already plug in under an Asus Xonar DGX and even a wi-fi controller (or lan if the integrated one breaks) which are small and would let the graphics card breathe. It only comes with 2 PCIe x1 but they come in the 3rd and 4th connector.

As usual, the B doesn't have a RAID controller. Then it's a matter of looking at the rear panel. The Bazooka Plus doesn't have 5.1 but it does come with USB 3.1 even type C and the MSI Mortar has digital audio output.

I suppose that M.2 prices will go down, a 950 Pro is great but in my opinion what's important is the access time, the sensible thing for the common people is to opt for SATA with a 250GB 750 that costs you less than half.

Then there's the memory limitation (2400+ need Z), 2400 or 2666 are noticeable with some games and don't skyrocket in price. Starting at 100 euros there are Z170 boards. The thing is that if you scrape together for a better graphics card, that's where it will be noticeable. I would even rather save up for a 6600 instead of a 6500, the 6400 is out of the question.

Editing: And then there's the one who wants to plug in 2 graphics cards, look for a Z for lanes and I think that someone who sets up 2 graphics cards is geeky and well-off enough (especially with Pascal since the 1060 doesn't allow SLI and 2 1070s aren't cheap) to bother with OC, which is more noticeable with 2 graphics cards.
