I think it's the logical evolution.
As you say, it already happened with the graphics chips integrated into the processor (which are becoming more and more powerful, to the point that in some computers it is not necessary to include a dedicated graphics card), with support for previous versions of USB, etc.
In fact, if I am not mistaken (correct me if I am not), in mobile processors that function has already been integrated for several generations. I don't see why desktop or laptop processors should be different from those of mobile phones, considering that that thin line is becoming more and more blurred.Realtek and Broadcom will have to readjust for more powerful and specific external products as Nvidia and ATI did in their time, because the coexistence between both formats (integrated and external Wi-Fi) seems inevitable.
