PC for 4k video editing
-
A client asked me to build a system for editing video in 4k.
Since the i7 7700k have some temperature issues, I thought about looking into AMD and their Ryzen processors, and in the end I decided on the latterThe configuration is:
Ryzen 1700x,
16Gb (2*8 Gb) Corsair standard,
500Gb Samsung Evo SSD,
2tB mechanical disk,
MSI 1060GTX 3gb graphics card
Asrock B350 Fatal1ty motherboard,
Antec NC650 (650w) power supply.
The cooling is an Antec Mercury 240
The case is a Nox Hummer ZX.Since he is going to use Adobe programs (Premiere, encoder) I will show you the results of some small tests I did to compare with a 4790k (my machine), an i7 7700k (for another client) and the Ryzen 1700x.
The tests are performed with the CPU and with Nvidia cards using CUDA.
The first test is to compress a video from a DVD NTSC (720*480) with a duration of 9 minutes 30 seconds to H264 CBR1,2
The second is to convert that same file to QT
The third consists of converting to H264 CBR 10 a composition of 4k files recorded with a Samsung Note 3, duration 3 minutes 14 seconds, with an overlay title and a light effect.
The fourth consists of scaling that composition to Full HD CBR 10
The fifth is to convert an 8k file (Patagonia 8k, downloaded from youtube, 2.1 Gb file) to H265 CBR 15
The sixth is to scale that 8k file to 4k, H265, CBR 10Regarding CUDA, I thought it accelerated the export of the movie... but it doesn't.
CUDA is used to accelerate certain tasks like color changes, rescaling... but encoding is done by the integrated CPU.The results are as follows:

I have encountered some curious problems with my home machine, and it gives me an error when running the tests with the 8k movie. I am still trying to solve them.
I will update it soonAs you can see, the Ryzen is more powerful in raw power than the i7. In some cases, almost worryingly more powerful

Regarding the results with CUDA, I see that my 780GTX is becoming small compared to modern ones. I thought that the GTX780 had great performance compared to modern GTX 10xx, but the tests tell me the opposite.
Anyway, I just wanted to share the results with you
Best regards
