Hello.
I am looking into the option of making a low-cost NAS.
I have tried a raspberry 2 with OpenMediaVault... and the truth is that it has left me with a very bad taste in my mouth. I don't find it at all intuitive and the fact that it is USB 2.0 is a weak point

As I can't spend what a qnap or a Synology costs.... I would like to know what you think about this if anyone has tried it...

I see it more as a device to take on a trip and be able to share files with mobile devices, but with wifi N the transfer speed will be even lower than with the Raspberry by cable. Personally, I have rarely been able to play Full HD videos over wifi without problems.

What I can't figure out is what the economic alternative could be, because I imagine that apart from low cost you will look for low consumption, so an old PC wouldn't work. Maybe a Synology or Qnap of one bay and second-hand.

And have you considered a router with USB 3.0 and DDWRT? There are some very cheap ones, and you can connect the disk via USB and access it via SMB. I have my work NAS set up this way, and it's a low-cost and very efficient solution. Even some internet providers' routers include a USB port, you could try if yours gives you the option.

For now I just want to store files.
I've looked at second-hand NAS, but the interesting ones are still expensive... At least that it has Gigabit network

To be honest, it hadn't occurred to me.
At work, I have the Orange router, but it's only ADSL... And at home, I have fiber with Movistar, which doesn't have USB...
I'll also look into that option. Thanks

I did some tests at home. With Wifi N, even with a short distance and with just a Pladur wall in between, it didn't reach 4MB/s, with a 100 network it was close to 11MB/s and with gigabit it was around 80/90MB/s. If they are small documents it doesn't matter, but if they are videos or files of several gigas it is noticeable.
