[Short entry] Steam for Linux will be able to run Windows games
-
Until now, the only way to use games on Linux via Steam was if the developer had ported the program. With that, there was a decent repertoire of games for Linux but compared to Windows, it was very limited. The people at Valve are going to use a modified version of Wine integrated into Steam in something they've called SteamPlay.
As they explain in this entry on the Wine website, Valve has been contributing code since 2016 incorporating support for DirectX 12 over Vulkan, OpenVR, and improvements to previous versions of DX among other things.
You have more details in the announcement from the Steam team.
