Summary of the week of January 12, 2026
-
We start with the first summary of the year:
Lack of RTX 5060 Ti
After a month on pause, the news continues to focus on the hardware apocalypse, now seasoned with cheap sensationalism, wishful thinking from manufacturers living a golden age and the hand of speculators trying to take advantage of the situation. The latter case is the one that seems to be happening in Japan where it is impossible to find RTX 5060 Ti.
New version of Budgie
The people at Budgie have released a new version of a mid-weight desktop environment that is generally quite unknown and that, with version 10.10, has made the leap to Wayland.
Windows 8 desktop on Linux
Someone has created a window compositor for Linux that mimics the look of Windows 8. It's Wayland and for now it has the basics, although the developer seems to be motivated.
Auto-CPUFreq 3.0 available
Auto-CPUFreq is a tool that helps extend the battery life of laptops running Linux. The savings are achieved by modifying the frequency and in the newly released third version, it is now possible to disable the CPU's turbo frequency.
Stock of laptops
Intel has said that laptop manufacturers currently have stock of their products for the next 9 to 12 months. This could cushion the price increase of certain components for buyers of these machines, unlike what happens for those who decide to build their own equipment.
