Apple wants to have its own flash memory factory
-
Apple is negotiating the acquisition of the Israeli company Anobit, dedicated to the manufacture of flash memory.
The conversations between both parties are quite advanced and the Cupertino firm is willing to pay up to 500 million dollars (about 380 million euros) to acquire this company, according to the information handled by the economic newspaper Calcalist.
Apparently, Anobit already supplies Apple with a type of flash memory that uses the Memory Signal Processing (MSP) system. This technology is based on algorithms that compensate for the physical limitations of NAND flash memory.
Apple's goal with this operation would be to have control over the manufacture of flash memory, so that it can stop depending on other companies and reduce the price of these components to lower the manufacturing costs of its devices.
NAND flash memory is currently used in a wide variety of products with the Apple seal such as the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or MacBook Air.
If the operation is closed, we would be facing the first acquisition of the post-Jobs era and one of the largest purchases in Apple's history.
