Microsoft acknowledges a bug in Windows Phone messaging
-
If the law of karma exists, it has taken a toll on Microsoft, as shortly after launching a campaign to expose the insecurity of Android, they have been forced to acknowledge the existence of a bug in Windows Phone.
The flaw was discovered by Khaled Salameh, who with the support of the site WinRumors, has been able to demonstrate that it is possible to undermine the functioning of messaging on Windows Phone devices through a denial of service attack.
The DDoS attack works by sending a Windows Phone a specially created SMS to challenge the system. This message, which could also be sent through Facebook chat or Windows Messenger, causes the device to restart and messaging to stop working.
In principle, this flaw affects all smartphones governed by the Microsoft OS such as HTC Titan or Samsung's Focus Flash.
At WinRumors they assure that the attack is not limited to specific devices and they believe that the origin of the problem lies in "the way the Windows Phone messaging hub manages messages".
Microsoft has already spoken out on this matter, acknowledging the existence of the bug: "We are aware of the problem and our engineering teams are examining it," said Greg Sullivan, Windows Phone product manager, "once we have more details, we will take the appropriate measures to ensure that customers are protected".
