Intel will jump into the tablet and smartphone market dominated by ARM's RISC microprocessor family, with its Medfield processors.

The American giant has already designed two prototypes, a smartphone and a tablet. Products integrating these Medfield chipsets are expected to be unveiled during the first half of 2012. The company announces that its launch will accelerate its mobile strategy.

Intel's smartphone prototype, tested by the prestigious MIT institute, is similar in dimensions to the iPhone 4, and operates with Android Gingerbread. According to those who have tested it, the smartphone is powerful and pleasant to use, and has nothing to envy to the most advanced devices on the market.

Intel has designed the circuits to specifically accelerate Android applications and web browsing. One of the features that stand out is the "burst mode" camera; capable of taking 10 full-size photos of eight megapixels at a speed of 15 per second.

Intel's chips, which could be presented at CES in Las Vegas, will outperform ARM processors in terms of performance, although their weakness could be battery life, vital for tablets and smartphones.
