    Duration of main hard drive brands' warranties.

      Hello.

      Given that lately mechanical drives, even those bought from or coming from the two main manufacturers of hard drives on the market, are coming out as crap, I wonder what the official warranties are for different brands for different models to know what to expect and at least have the certainty that during those years the drive will work correctly. I'm starting to think it might also be my problem.

      I add this link where I see that they have changed the warranty periods for seagate, but they don't match with those on the official page ¿?:

      I have a laptop that is now two and a half years old and I'm going to put in a third hard drive - I don't know to what extent it's necessary. You can comment on it. It came with a WD Scorpio blue and now a Seagate momentus has broken down. The two in a similar way. One day the computer starts to get stuck, when opening applications etc.

      So I run programs and smart and, either defective sectors that after running a program recover, or a lot of read errors in the smart test. Conclusion? Damaged disk surface. It would seem reasonable if I were moving the laptop frequently. But that's not the case and when I do it's always with the computer horizontal and without making sudden changes of plane, everything very delicately. It's on a table almost every day..

      So, seeing that I can't process the seagate warranty because it's an oem product, I have to either buy a new drive or stick with the one I have giving read errors to the point of no return without any damaged sectors, that's for sure. The questions aside from the years of warranty, which I will soon post here that I'm going to ask are:

      Is it advisable to change a drive that gives errors in the Raw Read Error Rate value in smart? Or is it not urgent as long as it doesn't show different signs of being wrong.

      Is it worth spending the money on an SSD for reliability. And which one is recommended?

        Always at least 2 years, no matter what the manufacturer says, the seller is required to provide it, after that it depends. SSD and reliability are not two very closely related concepts, there are many SSDs with low reliability or serious degradation problems. A few incorrect sectors are not a problem, if they keep increasing it is a warning, there are always some margins in SMART where it tells you if it is acceptable or not. And I think it was Speedfan that sends you to a website where you can compare the average of SMART readings for disks of the same type.

          I'm looking at the warranties, if possible I'll post a thread with them - at least the models I'm going to look at from each brand.

          And SSDs and reliability... well, pff. That doesn't make much sense. It's supposed to be the advancement. Mechanical parts are eliminated. It was until now the most fragile part of a computer's hardware. The most delicate. I think the degradation thing is more or less overcome. What I do understand is that sometimes the controllers give problems and stuff. But occasionally it's fixed with firmware updates. That said, I don't know how difficult it is to recover data from one of these dead disks. Anyway, like everything electronic-digital: Now yes, now NO, then the issue is fucked xD.

          In any case, maybe I'll consider an SSD that seems reliable and with a long warranty for the laptop - in case the problem is moving it from one place to another - and a good mechanical disk also with a long warranty to replace one that I use for backups.

          I'm also considering hybrid hard drives - at Seagate they have a 5-year warranty. And you have both things in one. I don't know...
