      Hello everyone,

I just bought an HP Probook 5310m laptop. This laptop does not have a DVD drive, which initially did not bother me because I imagined that at some point I would get an external drive. In the end, for various reasons, I decided not to buy the drive.

The problem is that I want to format the computer and reinstall the OS. I have seen in several places how to make a bootable USB for Windows installation, but the thing is that before touching anything, I wanted to make sure by looking in the Bios that I could set the USB as the boot drive. My surprise is that in the boot menu of the laptop, it only gives two options: Hard Drive and Ethernet.

Before I start messing around, I would like if anyone knows which is the best way to format and reinstall the OS, please give me some advice/recommendation (without buying the DVD of course ;D). I would not like to be left with the computer perfectly formatted but without OS;D

      Thank you very much.

First you need to pass the DVD, if it is Windows 7, Microsoft has its own tool to make backups of the installation DVD on both DVD and USB, first connect the Pendrive and verify that the BIOS detects it. It should do it at the first attempt.

It would be strange to me, that it didn't come with a recovery system, to return the installation to its original state from the first day.

Take a look at the manual.

Thank you very much. I will try it and I will tell you. As it is second-hand, I took it as is, without recovery CDs, manual or anything. It is from a company that is in bankruptcy proceedings.

Manual HP ProBook 5310m Notebook PC

Well, I've been poking around the manual for that machine, and yes you can boot from a USB stick.

              Device Configurations
              ■
Enable/disable USB legacy support (enabled by default).
When enabled, USB legacy support allows the following:
              ❐
Use of a USB keyboard in Computer Setup even when a
Windows operating system is not running.
              ❐
Startup from bootable USB devices, including a hard
drive, diskette drive, or optical drive connected by a USB
              port to the computer

The recovery system is built into the BIOS, and the image on a hidden partition of the hard drive.

              Maintenance and Service Guide (5-8)]
Restoring defaults will not change the hard drive mode.
To return all settings in Computer Setup to the values that were set at the factory, follow these steps:

              1. Turn on or restart the computer, and then press esc
while the “Press the ESC key for Startup Menu” message is displayed at the bottom of the screen.
              2. Press f10 to enter BIOS Setup.
              3. Use a pointing device or the arrow keys to select File > Restore Defaults.
              4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
              5. To save your changes and exit, click the Save icon in the lower-left corner of the screen, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

              – or –

Use the arrow keys to select File > Save Changes and Exit, and then press enter.
Your changes go into effect when the computer restarts.

Hope that's enough, if not, you know where we are. ;D

If not with an iso and Ultraiso you make a usb and that way you remove all the crap that the brands put on it. That is, before doing anything, download the drivers and copy them to the same usb after creating the bootable usb, not before, because Ultraiso formats the usb
