AMD newbie: can't I set the RAM that my A4's graphics use?
-
Hello, I hope someone with recent experience with AMD can help me out…I bought an AMD A4 5300 FM2, 4GB of DDR3 1800 and an MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 motherboard.
The system is built around the 6 sata3 ports on the motherboard. I couldn't find any Intel, so I opted to build an AMD system for the first time in ¿decades?
The thing is, I'm going to use the PC to download and serve files to the computers in my house all day long. I bought the A4 so I wouldn't have to put a dedicated graphics card and lose the pci-express, which might come in handy in the future for adding an extra sata controller.
I was very surprised when I saw that there is no option in the BIOS to adjust the amount of RAM that the graphics card will use. The 4GB is correctly recognized by the motherboard, but once I start Ubuntu/Windows 7, I only see 3.2GB. Installing the catalyst in Windows, I could see that 800mb are being assigned to the graphics card, so the numbers add up (for a moment I thought it was crashing with the 3GB limitation, even using 64-bit Ubuntu/Windows).
Is this normal? Is this how AMD's integrated graphics work?
Can't I change the assigned memory because of the CPU? Does the same thing happen with the A6, A10, etc?
Is my BIOS missing some parameter? I've read that there are other people with my problems, and they solve it with some parameter that I don't have. I've combed the BIOS from top to bottom and there's nothing related to memory. I only have 3 checkboxes left to activate in a Windows 8 submenu, already desperate.
And the memory... I've gone three towns over, I'll change it for another one at 1333mhz

Hello, I recently bought a 6800k and it's normal for it to show you 3.2gb since, as you say, the remaining 800 are reserved for the processor's graphics since it doesn't have ram.
As for being able to adjust it, I have no idea if it can be adjusted or not, I initially thought it couldn't, but since you mention it, let's see if someone with more knowledge can clarify something for us.

In the analyses, everyone talks about the improvement in graphic performance when using memories of 1600Mhz or higher, but they never talk about changing the amount of memory allocated to the iGPU, so I don't think it can be set at will.
Salu2!
