Problem Space for Ram
-
Hello, I was thinking about upgrading the RAM of my computer. I have a Cooler Master Dominator CM-690 II Advanced case with a Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 Socket 1156 motherboard.
I have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus cooler that almost touches the G.Skill Ripjaws PC3-12800 DDR3 1600 4GB 2x2GB CL9 memory modules (I installed them back in the day so they wouldn't touch), but now, if I add more memory modules to the free slots, they will almost certainly touch the memory.
My question is what kind of memory I could buy or how I should do it. I would like to add 2x2GB extra or 2x4GB depending on the price.
How do I do it and which ones do you recommend?
Here are some photos to give you an idea:

The photos don't make it very clear if it would only fit horizontally or also vertically, if so, it's assumed that to install the one in bank 1 you would have to disassemble the fan at the very least.
In any case, use the card to see if you have space or not (place it on top of the memory and try to slide it towards the heatsink, if it doesn't bend, everything is perfect).
If you didn't have space, or if when you put one of those modules to test, it touched, the cheapest solution is to get some CL9 memory without a heatsink, if you're not going to overclock them there's no problem. If on the other hand you prefer them with a heatsink (for whatever reason), you have the Ares from GSkill which, in my opinion, are the best in low profile. :sisi: -
Hello
normally the fans that are attached with wires usually have a margin of displacement with respect to the CPU try to take it out as far as possible and surely the memos will fit.
otherwise, although it is not very aesthetic: you disassemble the fan, you mount new RAM modules, you mount the fan without it resting on the RAM modules (but almost), you hold the fan to the other fan with clamps or with elastic bands

To expand memory, you either put identical memory (4x2GB), or you will have to configure the memory manually (in the best case scenario), or if you add 2x4GB, then you lose Dual Channel
My advice is that you buy 2x4GB or 2x8GB to replace the ones you have :sisi:

Thanks for the advice. I'll tell you what I tried:
I placed a module in the slot closest to the fan, it fits and works. It's sticking but not on the fan blades.
Anyway, I would prefer to get some lower ones and not have to move the fan, or leave them if it's not a problem that they stick to the fan plastic.
I had no idea that mixing 2Gb and 4Gb memories would lose the dual core... so thank you.
Between buying as you say 2x2Gb (thus having 4x2Gb) or buying 2x4Gb, I would lean towards the former for the reason that it's cheaper. It would be better as you say to buy 2x4Gb but it's more expensive since I don't want to have to sell the current ones to recover money.
Is what I'm saying crazy?
Low profile, which 2x2Gb would you recommend to me to complete the current ones? -
I would buy the same ones you already have, but there are also versions without fins, which are a bit lower, like these for 40€
Cheers!

Gigabyte recommends the same capacity but dual channel can also work with 2 different pairs. If you have to recommend, it is even better to have the same model, but incompatibilities are rare.

Intel's theory says (p. 19) that you can have 2x2GB and 2x4GB at the speed of the slowest module and all in Dual Channel, but on the LGA1156 platform the issue of memories is, let's say... complicated <:(
You just have to take a look at the number of posts about memories and P55 boards

How well the Core2s were doing :wall:
