"Remote Desktop" in Debian

I am changing the OS on my home server and I have the following question: How to manage with graphical environment from another machine the server.

I have tried with vnc, but it does not start until I log in to the server, something that does not interest me since it is a PC that will not have a monitor, keyboard or mouse.

With VNC without starting the graphic server I don't crash now. It's possible that you can create a script or run some command from ssh that starts X on the host computer.

In any case, the most efficient and interesting way is running graphic applications from ssh. If you use Linux, you just have to run in the console the graphic application you want to use. If you use Windows, from Putty you can do the same.

Once the application is executed, a window will appear on your local desktop as if it were a program that is running on your machine, but in reality it is running on the remote machine.

I'm not sure if FreeNX allowed you to log in without having logged in locally first, I haven't used it in a long time.
