NVIDIA has announced today its third graphics card model based on the "Pascal" architecture, the GeForce GTX 1060. With this proposal, NVIDIA intends to harm the newly launched AMD RX480 that Javisoft presented us a few days ago, setting its reference version to a recommended market price of $249 (which unfortunately will probably translate to €300 for us) and its Founders Edition version set at a price of $299. To minimize the risk of users using two GTX 1060 at a price between a GTX 1070 and a GTX 1080 but possibly with better performance in certain titles, they have removed support for SLI. Its availability is scheduled for July 19, 2016, and NVIDIA claims that the performance of a GTX 1060 will be similar to that of a GTX 980.

As for its technical characteristics, we have the new GP106 silicon chip, which has 1280 CUDA cores distributed in ten processors, 80 TMUs, 48 ROPs, and a 192-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface with a capacity of 6GB. The card is powered by a single 6-pin PCIe power connector with a TDP of 120W. The core runs at a speed of 1.7Ghz and the memory does so at 8 Gbps, providing 192 GB/s of bandwidth.

As you can see in the following images, the PCB is approximately 2/3 parts of the total length of the card and draws attention with the 6-pin PCIe connector not integrated into the PCB but in a receptacle at the end of the heatsink. According to NVIDIA, this has been designed this way because in cards with short PCBs with power supply, the connector usually goes to the side and not in the back, and users usually complain that the connector ends up in the middle of the card obstructing the components and at the same time covering the backlit NVIDIA emblem.

As a drawback to this power supply design, we have that said connector is soldered to the plastic of the heatsink and if we want to change the cooling from the series, we will be left with all the unsightly wiring that goes from the PCB to the connector.

It seems interesting for those who don't want SLI, but I'm sure that when the new 1080 Ti comes out, they'll release a 1060 Ti with SLI and that's it.
I want to see the 120W thing, and as for the connector, there's nothing like a cutter and skill to make it integrated into the new cooler.

It will be very interesting to see the rivalry between the custom models of the different assemblers of the GTX1060 and RX480.

Well since you mention that, has anyone seen any custom Inno3D model with OC as standard.

A little overkill that heatsink on a 120W card but I always appreciate it, I prefer it to be over-spec'd (with less noise) than with the cheap stock heatsink making noise…

I definitely think that if they promise, everything that NVIDIA says, especially if it gives the performance of the GTX980, there is a lot to talk about, besides the fact that surely some specific "custom" model from some assembler will enable SLI, and that's it. It also depends on demand, and how far they want to go. Given the performance of the GTX 1080, and what this 1060 is said to be, it would be remarkable that the 1070 would stay at just over a 980ti, right?

This year, it seems that NVIDIA is working on it like never before, let's hope that ATI's response to the 1080 promises or at least gets close to it.

Well we already have a ton of reviews!

                  TomsHardware

                  Arstechnica

                  The good

Better performance than a GTX 980 makes for fantastic 1080p gaming
Aggressively priced to take on the RX 480—and it's faster too
                  Sharp reference cooler design
                  120W TDP
                  Plenty of overclocking headroom
                  The bad

                  No SLI support
                  The ugly

Yet another pricey Founders Edition that stiffs partners and consumers

                  Guru3D

You'll play your games up-to 2560x1440 with nice framerates and proper image quality settings. Obviously that 6 GB framebuffer helps out quite a bit and does make your graphics card a little more future proof. The new architecture proves its agility and the die shrink to 16 nm FinFET shows low power consumption due to lower voltages and obviously the high clock-speeds and that 8 Gbps GDDR5 memory offer the product that the GTX 1060 is. The GeForce GTX 1060 is a terrific choice for the ones that game in the 1920x1080 up-to 2560x1440 resolution domain.

                  TechPowerUP

Faster than GTX 980, twice as fast as GTX 960
Temperatures below 80°C - no throttling
                  Very high quality, full-metal cooler
                  Very power efficient
New NVIDIA technologies: Ansel, FastSync, HEVC Video, and VR
                  HDMI 2.0b, DisplayPort 1.4
                  No SLI support
                  Fans don't stop in idle
                  No backplate
DVI output no longer includes analog VGA signals

                  Gamespot

While Nvidia is marketing the GeForce GTX 1060 as a capable graphics card to run 1080p games maxed out, it can also handle many 1440p games well. According to my numbers, the $300 graphics card runs 1.6 percent faster than the GTX 980–which is a card that you’ll still find online for roughly $100 more. While it isn’t always faster than the GTX 980, my tests do validate Nvidia’s assertions that the two cards are generally comparable.
Overall, the GTX 1060 is a great card for 1080p gaming, offers excellent VR performance for the price, overclocks well, runs cool, and is super-quiet.

                  Techspot

Pros: Cool operating temps, overclocks decently (better than competition), exceptional power efficiency. Strong DX11 performance. It's a really good value at $250 for partner boards.
Cons: The RX 480 4GB easily wins the cost per frame battle. Low-level API performance is concerning. No SLI support.

Does anyone understand why Guru3D says it's a bad option for playing at 1080p? Are they referring to the RX480 being a better option for its price/performance at 1080p (as pointed out by techspot)? The other sites say the opposite.

Looking at Tom's Hardware, it seems that in DX12 it is still to be seen, but in DX11 at the same price, it seems that in most cases the GTX1060 usually beats the RX480, although in some pro-Nvidia games it is not so, and in others it loses.

I am looking forward to seeing the prices of the improved models from each manufacturer.

MSI also has a very affordable model (up 30Mhz), although perhaps the Gainward looks a bit better, both for the cooler and the outputs.
