As it sounds, **HP** released an update for the firmware of several of its inkjet printer models to produce a "defective cartridge" error if it detects that the microchip is not original, starting from September 13. The affected models, as far as is known, are the **HP OfficeJet**, **OfficeJet Pro** and **OfficeJet Pro X**. The issue of compatible consumables is not something new, and it is something that those interested have always been very careful to ignore; either by launching campaigns in which they warn of the incredible (if not credible) dangers of using non-original replacements, of the lack of quality of the compatibles, of the number of kittens that God kills when we make use of the latter, etc. Well, apparently they have tired of having all these users on their particular list of terrorists, and have decided to cut to the chase to "protect HP's innovations and intellectual property." However, according to **HP**, "cartridges with an original chip refilled or repaired cartridges that have an original HP security chip, should continue to work." **"With premeditation, treachery, and more pity than glory"** ...as Sabina would sing. Now, the question is why did users update the firmware? Apparently, they didn't, at least consciously. Everything points to it being prepared in advance, since according to sources the last firmware update came out in March of this year, and was developed during the last months of the previous one. The solution, to do a regression by installing a firmware from 2014, is not something that a user without much experience can do, and it is urged that this version be made available to users... something that **HP**, as a fair and responsible company, will eventually do. :troll: HP printers start rejecting budget ink cartridges - BBC News
