Windows startup problem
-
Well, a while ago I upgraded from XP to Windows 7... and I don't know what was going on, but it wouldn't let me install it. I would boot from the CD and the Windows 7 installation background would come up and the mouse icon would load and it would never get past that. It didn't matter which CD I used. I thought it was a RAM problem. I ruled out the graphics card because it was new and worked fine, and I didn't want to get too involved in it, so I just let it go... I managed to install it by putting the CD in the computer while it was already running Windows. I would go to my PC, go to the CD, and install it. The only thing was, I wanted to install it on a new HDD that I had bought, and I selected that it would be installed on the new one, but to my surprise... everything went perfectly, it installed fine, and I had two Windows installations, but!!!! the boot was on the other hard drive. I don't know if I explained it well... without the other hard drive (the old one) plugged in, I can't boot the new one. Do you understand? So there must be a way to transfer the boot sectors to the new one??? I've tried repairing the installation on the new one after, but it's no use... and of course, having the boot sector on the other hard drive means it won't run at full performance. Well, if anyone knows anything, that's perfect, if not, that's fine because what I'll do is the same method but on the new hard drive for the other (the old one) so I can format it.:mudo::mudo::mudo::mudo::mudo::mudo:

thanks.. i guess it will also work for windows 7 right?. i have 2 hd's:(just in case you don't understand the above)
hd1: contains windows xp and the boot sector of windows 7
hd2: contains windows 7 installation but depends on the old hd to boot...mostly i want to create or move the windows boot sector to hd2 because hd1 is terrible with noises and about to explode xD..
but anyway thanks for the page.. now in september with the arrival of the new graphics card i'll do a format and get serious**.gracias..**

I already understand you, disconnect disk 1 and do a fixboot on disk 2.

If I try to boot from the HD2, it says it can't find the boot... I have to boot with the HD1 for the option to use the previous version or 7 to appear, and then Windows 7 starts up but installed on the HD2
``Legend´´:D
HD1: (old, with noises) contains an old XP installation and the Windows 7 boot (which redirects to the HD2)
HD2: (brand new) contains Windows 7 but needs to boot from the HD1 -
You have to boot from the Windows DVD and rewrite the boot… that's what fixboot is for.

ok thanks it's already solved.
