Hard Drive Noises.

Hello fellow users,

I have just installed the new components I bought this Christmas (Graphics card and Power supply) and everything is going perfect except for one thing.

My hard drive, which previously did not make any noise, now makes a small noise from time to time. The noise occurs when the computer is "thinking", I mean, that at rest you can't hear anything.

Should I be alarmed by this small noise?

I insist on the "small noise" because I am considering the possibility that this small noise has been happening for a longer time, only that with my old power supply (noisier) I couldn't hear it..

Hello

Being a mechanical drive and if it's a few years old, it's normal for it to do so, however, if it's less than 4 or 5 years old and is quite used, it's likely that it's already somewhat deteriorated.
Run some tests to look for errors or bad sectors or to find out the health status of the drive, such as hdd health. The greater or lesser number of problems you find with the tests can indicate the health of the hard drive.

since the hard drive may be about 5 years old. I have given it quite a bit of use in terms of copying/pasting/moving large files, but not excessively I think...

I will see if I can run the test on it and post the results here.

All mechanical hard drives produce a small noise when reading/writing, like a gurgling or scratching. It is a very particular noise.
Depending on the quality of the disk, revolutions, age or anchoring in the case, that noise can be appreciated more or less.
As you rightly indicate, it is possible that you have always had it, but now the noise of the power supply does not cover it.

Exactly, I could not have described it better. The noise is a "gurgling or scratching".

Anyway, I will run the test to see if it is damaged or not.

I have run a test on the hard drive, and the only thing it found was that 1 sector is damaged..

I'm not sure if I saw it correctly, but I think there were a total of 100 sectors. Could this be it?

The thing is, I'm not sure if it's very serious..

if the "touched" sector is the boot sector, then let's say it is serious (as long as it is the main one); otherwise, the program for HDs usually reconfigures the hard drive to not write to the damaged sector (out of sight, out of mind.

example: a 6Ggs Seagate has 13328 cylinders, 15 heads, 63 sectors, 6448 mb

Pass on the CrystalDiskInfo if you feel more at ease and to clear up any doubts.
