Hace escasos 2 meses compré el Macbook Air de 11″ (Mid 2011) en la configuración básica con Intel Core i5, 2GB de RAM DC, SSD de 64GB. En estas semanas me ha dado tiempo a sacar conclusiones firmes de que tal es su rendimiento, resistencia y uso.

**Antecedentes.
**
Os pondré en antecedentes para que entendáis mi punto de vista, hace como unos 5 años compré mi primer Macbook de aquellas el modelo de 13″ recién salido, en brillante plástico blanco, era de las pocas alternativas atractivas en torno a los 1000€, al parecer los fabricantes aun no habían comprendido que había gente común y corriente que quería un portátil para llevar cómodamente y aun estaban comenzando a salir modelos. Y aunque Apple ya había tenido éxito en el pasado con su Powerbook de 12″, muy apreciado por sus poseedores, realmente no se había extendido lo suficiente básicamente por ser un powerpc pero ahora Apple había dado el salto a Intel y las cosas habían cambiado. Por desgracia no fue el único, fueron dos, y el final de ambos el mismo: se caen a pedazos, sí, su resistencia deja bastante que desear.

Pero los tiempos han cambiado y con la fabricación unibody de Apple ese problema también, además han introducido el nuevo concepto de ultraportátil, que viene siendo lo que aquel Powerbook 12″ a los IBM de 12″, esas cajas negras caras y aburridas que solo algún ejecutivo compraba. Cuando el Air salió anunciado solo Sony fabricaba satisfactoriamente ultraportátiles y si eran caros y aburridos. Todo hay que decir que ese primer Air tampoco me convenció, como casi todo lo que saca Apple en primera versión, pero vualá llegaron los Air de 2a generación con un diseño magnifico y además se sumaba un nuevo tamaño de 11″.

**Exterior.
**
Y así es el diseño es impecable, una obra de arte, tanto es así que tiene detalles en el acabado impensables como las microperforaciones para ocultar los leds bajo el aluminio o el micrófono, o algo tan aparentemente nimio como la calidad de los conectores.

Que hay de su resistencia, pues bien creo que soy un ejemplo de alguien que maltrata habitualmente sus portátiles dando golpes, movimientos bruscos, etc. y hay que decir que una caracasa de aluminio con un SSD dentro es tremendamente resistente. Nada que ver con los antiguos en plástico que tantos problemas dieron, por algo Apple ha eliminado ya esa gama de su catálogo.

El tamaño es perfecto, menor al de un A4, con lo cual es muy como de llevar y aunque el grosor se podría reducir el diseño que le han echo afilandolo a los bordes da la sensación de ser la mitad de lo que es y al fin y al cabo eso también importa. Más pequeño complicaría el tamaño del teclado, de la pantalla, etc. y realmente esto no es un netbook en el que resulta un tanto incomodo pasar las horas.

**Rendimiento.
**
Evidentemente el diseño no lo es todo, el rendimiento de estos portátiles es tremendamente sorprendente llegando a rendir muy cerca de los Pro, esto es gracias a los nuevos i5 que tienen un rendimiento brutal aun a velocidades contenidas, una memoria DDR3 configurada en doble canal y su SSD. Hablamos de un sistema que en 20″, desde que pulsas el botón, estás trabajando en el escritorio y que en 3″ ya está apagado, y permite trabajar fluidamente con programas de diseño y casi cualquier tarea. Pero no voy a caer en mi encanto, hay puntos flacos, por ejemplo la cantidad de RAM que aunque es evidente que no sale tan barata porque va incorporada en la placa y a menor tamaño, creo que el precio actual permitiría duplicar capacidades y por otro lado el rendimiento del SSD que aunque lo más importante es la fiabilidad a día de hoy creo que estamos en disposición de montar cosas más rápidas. Ambos defectos quedan minimizados al usar OSX que ocupa poco, arranca rápido y maneja muy bien la RAM.

Hay algo que sigue siendo un punto negativo, aunque es evidente por la falta de espacio, pero la refrigeración es la justa y cuando lo hacemos trabajar al 100% se calienta y hace ruido… eso me imagino que le llevará en 5 años como le ha pasado a uno de mis viejos MacBooks a que gripe el ventilador, pero bueno sigue siendo menos importante porque los i5 se calientan menos que cualquier procesador anterior.

**Conectividad y extras.
**
En el tema de conectividad puede parecer algo cojo, realmente esos 2 puertos USB 2.0 deberían ser substituidos en breve por 2 USB 3.0, pero Apple ha dado el bombazo y en parte gracias a la alianza con Intel en incluir desde ya el puerto thundervolt con el que en breve podremos conectar prácticamente cualquier cosa como: múltiples discos enlazados configurados en RAID, pantallas de 27″, gráficas externas, docks con todo tipo de conexiones, adaptadores a HDMI, USB, audio, etc. Así que podemos decir que aunque ahora esta cojo, mañana le quitan las muletas.

De extras el teclado retroiluminado no podía faltar que además al igual que el brillo de la pantalla se regulan automáticamente según la luz que haya, y lo más grande que tiene el portátil su trackpad, y sí, el tamaño importa. Cuando uno trabaja con este tipo de portátiles suele tener que usar varios escritorios y cambiar de ventana, de página, hacer scroll, etc. evidentemente antes siempre tratábamos de conectar un ratón a la mínima de cambio para facilitarnos el trabajo; pues bien, es tan sumamente cómodo trabajar con este pad y los gestos multitouch que lo prefiero al ratón. Volviendo a la realidad, no todo es perfecto y hay que acostumbrarse a estos gestos, como punto negro marcar y arrastrar con la otra mano no funciona como me gustaría, pero es casi lo único.

Llegados a este punto habría que hablar de si es cómodo trabajar con una pantalla de 11,6″ exactamente, y sí lo es, evidentemente depende de para que porque no es un portátil recomendado para diseñadores gráficos pero para el resto de actividades no se hace pequeña la pantalla por 2 cosas una buena resolución y la posibilidad de hacer zoom en casi cualquier sitio para mejorar la lectura. Aparte de eso OSX Lion incluye la posibilidad de casi en cualquier aplicación trabajemos a pantalla completa en un nuevo escritorio junto con un lanzador de aplicaciones muy similar al de un iPad que se muestra con un simple gesto en el pad.

**Software.
**
OSX Lion está muy bien optimizado e incluye como decíamos funciones que ayudan el uso en pantallas pequeñas, pero que hay de sus aplicaciones han mejorado? Echando una mirada al pasado había ciertas tareas complicadas en Mac como por ejemplo trabajar con cuentas que no fueran made in Apple, esto ha cambiado ahora solo con configurar una cuenta de google por ejemplo sincronizará nuestra agenda, calendario, email y también funciona ya el email con cuentas IMAP pudiendo configurar las carpetas.

Toque de atención al iCal que no borra correctamente los eventos de la agenda en Google, pero bueno aparte de eso el resto de aplicaciones son correctas, sin hablar de QuickTime X que para variar sigue siendo un porquería, gracias que hay muy buenos reproductores como MPlayer X que nos harán olvidar que Apple sigue anclada en ciertos aspectos.Otra cosa que se echa en falta es que ya venga la escritura en NTFS por defecto en el sistema y como no otro clásico relacionado con archivos, el Finder que sigue siendo casi imposible hacerlo funcionar a nuestro gusto y lo han complicado más con dos tipos de formas de ordenar los archivos pero tiene nuevas características y han mejorado algo el Quick View. Y los lectores de imágenes y PDF funcionan bastante bien.

Safary también ha cambiado bastante incluyendo como siempre novedades intranscendentales pero sorprendentes como una lista de lectura pendiente, vista de lector, un nuevo menú para las descargas, historial en imágenes, una navegación adelante y atrás instantánea. Pequeño paréntesis para decir que no lo han hecho perfecto, porque después de mostrarte al instante la página al medio segundo hace una recarga con lo que se carga en parte la experiencia, es para darle con algo en la cabeza al que lo programó y decirle “que no hay un botón de recarga arriba por si lo necesito o que?”. Y algunas no tan sorprendentes y si demandadas, como plugins y navegación privada, que bien podía ser independiente por pestañas, pero bueno ‘pecara minuta’.

**Conclusiones.
**
Este es uno de los portátiles más recomendables que he probado en la vida, es realmente portátil, resistente y potente. Tiene sus defectos, capacidades de SSD y RAM, pero aun así vale la pena y el precio es el justo comparado con su competencia.

**Tamaño y peso.
Potencia.
Resistencia.
Diseño.

**Contras:
**Precio.

Come on, let's clear up doubts, it's something I had never done before, let's go... Safari with 14 windows open from the main newspapers and portals, iCal, Mail, Caffeinated, iChat, Skype, iTunes, Activity Monitor... RAM consumption 1.98GB. Result it works perfectly, there is hardly any difference in working with the loaded RAM. Having 2GB on a Mac is like having 4GB on Windows, it may seem strange but it is, obviously if you are going to work with programs like Final Cut Pro that asks for a minimum of 2GB of RAM then it would be better for you to consider one with more memory, but for the normal activities of a laptop you will not have limitations.

No, the only thing that can be changed is the SSD and the battery.

Maybe I didn't explain that point well, a thundervollt connection can be converted into an HDMI with a simple adapter, if your TV doesn't have one maybe it's time to change it xP, or in SATA, USB, Firewire, audio ports, in short anything. Because thundervolt is a connection almost direct with the PCIE channel so any type of controller card can become a peripheral. That's why I emphasize that it gives great versatility, the thing about soon taking away the crutches I say it because this year many peripherals will start to come out for this standard, seen what was seen at CES 2012.

I have had in my hands almost all types of small Macbooks, the first 13" with the exception of the last one that didn't last long, the old Pro 13", the last 13", the old Air 13", the new 13" and now this 11"... and surprisingly I have liked this one more, although the 13" has two more advantages screen resolution and more battery. But as comfortable to carry the 11" without a doubt.

Hey, the TV is new and it's not the thing to change every 4 months :risitas:, it does have HDMI, what it doesn't have is Thunderbolt :p.

I understand about the 2GB performance, since Lion (and the others Os X) optimize its use more.
Obviously it is what it is, a small and light laptop (although powerful). If you want to handle high-performance programs what you are looking for is another range of laptops. But some "mini laptops" break down even with the most routine tasks like browsing with several tabs open at the same time and constantly changing applications.

Well, I'm about to get one, but since my 2007 macbook (that little white one xD) is still holding up, I'll wait until they're updated with ivy bridge and with a little hope that they improve the battery and resolution, and if they let you increase the RAM even more, better. We'll see how it goes. I think I can stretch it until March-April at most.

And in the meantime, we save up until that moment to get the most we can

I doubt the screen resolution, if they reduce it it would become uncomfortable, the one they currently have in both models is quite good, otherwise you would have to get very close as if it were a tablet or overuse the zoom. I think they will simply change the Sandy for an Ivy and add a USB 3.0, I don't think there will be any other novelty in the Airs, maybe in the Pros.

I agree with the lack of RAM and I was surprised that it only has two USB 2.0
It's good that the SSD can be replaced, so you can increase performance even more, although on the other hand, the inability to expand the RAM, which stays as it comes from the factory, weighs on it.

In general, it continues to be far from my budget and my requirements, today I don't have a laptop and I don't miss it but it's not a bad idea to find out firsthand how the latest MacBooks are doing, who knows, maybe in a few months I'll find myself needing to buy one (and if the price drops xD)

Very nice and elegant, really. I don't think the screen is that small, as you said if you don't require industrial or professional use with large images, it's enough size :sisi:

I'm using it daily to read forums, feeds, chat, email, PDF, calendar, everything that has keyboard use. And it's very comfortable, the 13" is the same but a bit bigger, for me the main thing about the laptop is that I can move it from one side to another with the least space it takes and the less noise it makes the better, I laugh at the people who sit in the cafeteria with their 15":risitas:

The led, you can see that in the images it doesn't show up next to the webcam, but when it turns on you can see it. And the side microphone is next to the sound jack connector and the perforations are a bit more visible but it's very discreet.
