Tips for a server. (guide)
-
Hello everyone!
Since the last time I wrote a post, my personal machine hasn't changed much, but in my internship (of vocational training) I'm being consulted about the optimal needs of a server for a small company. And here I am with doubts:
The server will host web pages, file management of a local network, and will also perform switchboard functions.
According to my concepts of computer hardware, I was thinking of something like my PC, the one from the company, only removing the graphics card and adding more RAM 16GB or something like that, I'm not sure about the hard drives, should I go for SSD? Sata3? or how and another thing that worries me is the issue of having it on 24h, will the cooling be correct?
I thought about the RAM because of the possible simultaneous processes it may suffer, with an i5 having 4 cores and 4 threads, I see it as sufficient but I have my doubts.
Let's see what you think?
Regards.

If it's a serious company with money, go for a server platform with enterprise disks (SAS for example), ECC memory, redundant power supply and all the rest.

No.. creo que no. The company is serious but the IT department is run by a guy who is doing his internship for his higher technical degree in telecommunications and computer science to get the course approved and that's me

I don't know what redundant power supplies are, could you tell me a bit about it

Everything depends on the use, it is not the same to host a website with 1000 daily visits than one with 100,000 or a server for a small local DB than a data server for 100 clients… Everything depends, in principle what you put does not require a great use of CPU nor of RAM unless you virtualize several systems, but depending on the type of data you will have to see if you distribute them on several disks, make a RAID or use an SSD.
And being for a small company, where normally there is no IT maintenance personnel, it is not a bad idea to have a team from a well-known brand along with assistance. Servers from Dell, HP, Lenovo... something like that.
As for the source, I also do not think it is necessary because it will be a low-consumption team, a UPS would be necessary.

Redundant system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Power supplies
Nowadays, servers come with at least two power supplies, which are responsible for providing electricity to the computer. These power supplies are connected to different electrical systems, to ensure the supply, in case of failure of either the power supply itself or the electrical system. This redundancy of the power supply not only affects servers, but also affects routers, switches, etc.
P.S.: Recently I saw one on pccomponentes, it wasn't the most pro but being 500W redundant it cost like a good one of 1000.

Alright, thank you very much. I'll look into the sources, but with a general read-through, this is what the company needs.
Now I'll look into RAID to see what I can figure out. I'll look at pre-configured equipment like servers, on PC components I've seen one HP. Just one...
HP ProLiant ML110 G6 X3430/5GB/2x250GB KIT KIT-PROLIANT-7 PC Computer
Although at first glance it seems like a very ordinary machine, because it doesn't include SAS drives, they're just normal SATA, the RAM is very standard... I don't know... I thought they would have something more special about ventilation or something...
Or would this be a better fit?

Look directly at the HP page, I have assembled a few ML350 G6, some more or less expanded, the price varies quite a bit there.. (depending on how much you expand it).
