Hello! I wanted to build a PC with parts for a family member for a new business so as not to spend any money on the PC.

I had saved a motherboard "Asus K8N4-E Deluxe" that initially had a faulty sound card, but disabling it in the BIOS didn't cause any problems when having a stable OS.

The problem comes when I have to install the drivers for any graphics card (it doesn't have an integrated one), I don't know why the image freezes and I have to restart the PC. If I don't install the drivers and leave it as an unknown device, the screen doesn't freeze. The screen freezing is random, it can happen 2 minutes after starting up or 5 minutes into the PC booting.

I have the impression that it might be a problem with the northbridge chipset. When they brought me that PC to fix, it had a small heatsink on the northbridge chipset that was rusted from rot and wouldn't move, and with the heat, a small blister came out due to the heat. Now I put a small passive heatsink from another motherboard and the temperature of this one is normal.

Do you have any idea why it freezes when installing the video card drivers?

      Thanks!

PD: I have already tested the memory, hard drive, and processor, all OK

Well, I think you've already said it all. ;D

If the default driver doesn't show such a problem, and assuming the graphics are an accelerator, try loading it, see what happens. If it overcomes it, then it might not be the NB.

          Thanks for the reply!

By "loading" do you mean running a stress test with furmark for example?

Let me see if I can find an old graphics card that goes by PCI today in the afternoon to see if it doesn't cause a problem.

In my opinion, it is more likely that the problem is with the graphics card, proof of this is that without drivers it works well because it runs at minimum settings. The problem is that when you install drivers, the VGA works as it should and that's when it fails. Try another graphics card and you will probably solve the problem.

No, it was not a graphics problem because I had already tried several and all of them had the same problem, both ATI and NVIDIA.

In the end, I found an NVIDA RIVA TNT2 that has a PCI connection, quite old but for its function which is going to be for invoicing and little more, it is more than enough.

In conclusion, the motherboard has a fault in the PCI EXPRESS port or in the north bridge when communicating or that's what it seems.

Issue solved, thanks for the answers!

                  +1

And regarding the integrated sound card, it is possible that the internal jumpers are not properly placed and that is why it does not work. With a verification by taking a look at the motherboard manual, you will be out of doubts.

                  regards

Yes, the board supports pci express for vga: 1 x PCI Express™ x16 slot for discrete graphics card. The sound problem is similar to the graphics card, when you enable the sound in the bios it automatically hangs when starting. The jumpers are fine, except for these two problems the board is now working perfectly.
