I'm planning my new computer and I'm having doubts about the hard drives.

As the main one, I was thinking of putting a 256 gigas SSD (this one to be exact: Samsung 840 MZ-7PD256 - Pro Series), and then a mechanical one of 2 or 3 terabytes to keep things (downloads, work, photos, etc.).
But 256 gigas scares me that they will be too short, but an SSD with more capacity goes over budget. So I've considered putting as the main one this other one that has 500 gigas: WD VelociRaptor 500GB SATA3

What do you think? Pros and cons of one and the other...

      Regards.

I think the approach of 256 +2/3 Tb SSD is correct. Keep in mind that it will only be for the system and programs, everything else will be on the other disk. I have a disk scheme similar to the one you propose and I currently use a little less than half of the SSD.
Velociraptors no longer make sense, with SSDs existing, besides the fact that they are noisy as hell.

Well, it depends on what programs you are going to use. If you are going to install 30 games, it will be insufficient for you; if not, you have plenty of disk for normal use.

As an alternative, you can move programs that are less used and are also large to the other disk. If you have a good amount of memory, they will take longer to load, but then you will have the same performance because what matters is where the work files are, and if you are going to have them on the HDD...

You can also consider instead of a 3 Tb disk, setting up 2 of 1.5 Tb in RAID 0, which will improve the performance of that disk. Always look for reliable models because with RAID 0 you double the probability of failure.

I agree with Nemo that the raptor and velociraptor no longer make sense. In addition, the 2 that I have had, the 2 have crashed...

            Thanks for the clarification.

The velociraptor passed by, but if they break…

I'll put the 256 gig SSD, in principle it's just the OS, the Adobe suite, some program like Vegas Pro and games (not 30 xD, some to play but once I finish a game I'll uninstall it to put another one if I have enough space).

And as a secondary one to store things, the 2/3 T one and that's it. If in a while I see that I'm running out of space on the SSD, I'll add a 500 gig mechanical one and move the programs (Adobe and all that) there (Adobe and all that) which once loaded are supposed to need mainly RAM, and the games and the OS on the SSD.
