PC upgrade (2008)

Hello! In 2008 I bought a PC with the following qualities

INTEL DUAL CORE E8400 @3.00 (Currently at 4.00)
4GB DDR2 800 RAM
ASUS P5K MOTHERBOARD
ATI HD 4850
420W POWER SUPPLY
MAXTOR 500GB HDD

I would be interested in a computer for gaming (Counter Strike, Heroes of Newerth, League of Legends etc… Where I don't suffer from FPS as I am suffering right now, so I had thought about improving some parts, without spending much economically.

What would you suggest?

Do you think that with about 500€ I could put together a gaming PC for a few years?
As you can see if I take advantage of the hard drive, card reader and even the graphics card?

I think that if you manage to buy a Quad Core, there are some for 40-50€ like the Q6600 that honestly doesn't perform anything more even with many current games, but then you have the problem of the graphics card that is a few years old and the power supply that you don't say what brand and model it is and may not support a more powerful graphics card.

If you don't want to spend much I would sell the micro and buy a Quad Core as I told you and the change would come out for very little. For your micro you can get about 30-35€ and the Quad Core I have already told you that for 40-50 there are some.

You also have to know at what resolution you play. I only play at 1280*1024 and with the computer from the signature I don't have any problems (I haven't played Battlefiel 4) But I moved the 3 at high resolution at that resolution. For low resolutions like mine a graphics card of about 90-100 today moves well.

For 500€ you can build a nice computer without excesses:

If you want to save something the micro you put one with 6 cores, but you will save little and I think it's not worth it, that is, in the power supply as I told you for 60 there are already some good ones but I put a very good and modular one, to remove the cables you don't use.

It's around 550€ or a little more, but selling your components you will get more or less: For the Motherboard about 30 For the micro the same, For the 4 Gigas of memory about 30 also, for the graphics card about 25-30 and for the power supply if it's bad, no more than 10, so for your components you would get about 120-130 and the update would cost you just over 400€.

Personally I would look for a cheap Quad Core and overclock it. And when you had savings, first a new power supply and graphics card, to stretch the PC more, a few months or a year, and then change the platform. Or all at once. If you only put a Quad Core and overclock it, most games that use more than 2 cores will go a little better, with higher minimum frames (less pronounced frame drops).

mainly I'm interested in optimizing Counter Strike, and it usually uses 1 core or 2 cores, so I think a Quad Core wouldn't increase much performance… I'm more inclined to a new motherboard and put an i5 (would the graphics card be compatible?)
Then increase RAM and finally the graphics card

The graphics card would indeed be compatible by changing the motherboard, there is no problem. But then you have to buy Motherboard + micro + memory (DDR2 is not good for you) so honestly, if you are going to make the investment, do it when you have to buy a graphics card and as I say, you will probably have to change the power supply.

So about what I have indicated, you put an I5 like: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4Ghz Box BX80646I54670K Processor

And a motherboard like this, which does not have to be this one: Asrock Z87 Pro4 90-MXGPP0-A0UAYZ Motherboard

If you can't afford to change the whole system, I would first put a better power supply and graphics card and then look at selling your graphics card and micro and with them buy a Quad Core. Honestly, I doubt that the latest Counter will only use one or two cores. If that were the case, there wouldn't be much difference between using a micro like yours and an I5 even though the I5 has a higher IPC, and believe me, both the I5 and the FX sweep your micro in games.

I myself with the equipment in my signature have played very well Counter Global offensive, but honestly it bored me and I didn't play it for even an hour. You don't need a top-notch system to play that game.
