RAM memory doubt
-
Good afternoon/night, first of all I have to say that I have bought a motherboard from msi the z97 gaming 3, which supports memory frequency of 3330MHz or something like that, with the Intel processor the i5-4690k, and I see that it says that the supported frequency of the memories is 1333 and 1600 MHz, when I wanted to get some of 2400MHz, and I have read that I would have to enter the BIOS and configure them manually or something like that, so my doubt is that if I do that would I be doing an over-clock to the memories? is that I would prefer not to start doing it yet, so I do not know if it would be better for me to get some of 1600MHz and that's it, besides with less latency. These are the two options I was thinking:
G.Skill Trident X DDR3 2400 PC3-19200 8GB 2x4GB CL10 : 80€
G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3 1600 PC3-12800 8GB 2x4GB CL7 : 71.95€
Could you explain me some concept that maybe you think with what I have written that I am wrong and/or advise me between those two models?
Thanks and regards!

As the manufacturer states, cycles above 1600 require OC. That being said, it should be noted that sometimes you have to set the memory clock manually because the board detects them at lower frequencies (for example, a RAM at 1600 is detected at 1333)… which leaves a very thin line between an adjustment and an OC (defined by the manufacturer on the manufacturer's page).
MSI Global Z97 GAMING 3
@msi.com:
DDR3 Memory
DDR3 1066/1333/1600/1866*/2000*/2133*/2200*/2400*/2600*/2666*/2800*/3000*/3100*/3200*/3300*(*OC) MHzPersonally, I would go for the 1600 CL7 without hesitation, besides I hate RAMs with a comb, which are made exclusively to give a hard time with certain heatsinks. ;D

Thank you very much! I will think a little more about whether 2400MHz with cl10 is better for me or 1600MHz with cl7

Hello, I just joined the forum, and I was just looking for information on this topic, which now I'm more confused xD.
Let's see… I've been in the world of computer science for a short time, a couple of years ago I bought a computer with an MSI z87 g45 gaming motherboard, with an ASUS Radeon R9 290X DirectCU II OC 4GB GDDR5 graphics card, and Corsair Vengeance PC3-12800 DDR3 1600 16GB 2x8GB CL10. Now I'm thinking about expanding the Ram and putting another Radeon in crossfire, and my doubt was whether to expand with another 16g of ram or change the ram for this other Vengeance Pro Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 2400Mhz CL10, but after reading this post I'm confused...Do the OC memories come overclocked by default?
What do you recommend?

OC in RAM simply means that by increasing the speed, they reach those frequencies.
In fact, and as I explained before, practically all boards require modifying the RAM frequency for modules with values higher than 1600 Mhz. That is, if you install an 1866 module without tinkering in the BIOS, it will work by default at 1600.
Regarding the expansion, what is not recommended to mix are latencies, simply because the system will take the speed of the slowest (the one with the highest CAS latency). Using two modules, one with CL 9 and another with CL10, the system will make both work with a value of CL10.
With the frequencies this does not happen, however, you have to make sure that they are not mixed in the same channel.
Having said this, the frequency is as important as the latency, I prefer a 1866 CL8-9-9-24 to a 2400 CL10-12-12-31, but to each their own…Edit: Ah, and welcome to the forum.

Thank you very much, my doubt has been totally cleared!

But now I am clear that I will have to leave it for later, I will try to sell mine and get some DDR3 A 1600MHZ DOMINATOR
PLATINUM SERIES OF 16 GB (2 X 8 GB) C7Thank you very much again, I wish I had asked before buying them jajajaja :wall:

Could you tell me out of curiosity why do you need more than 16GB? O.o
xD
