On the one hand it's a shame, because they were putting a lot of effort and resources into achieving the much-desired convergence and to carry out their projects, but on the other hand they were making war on their side, trying to be a new Microsoft or Apple but within the GNU/Linux ecosystem. And the bad thing about the latter is that the benefit that other distros got from this was very scarce.
Unity?, well it was what made me stop using Ubuntu, just as Windows 8 was what made Windows almost stop being the main option for me. Gnome also took that same path, so for a while I had to look for more classic but modern paths at the same time, like KDE, Cinnamon... although because of things of some and others here I find myself with Mate, the closest thing currently to Gnome 2.x which was the desktop I used for years on Debian and Ubuntu.
I don't know what future Ubuntu has on the desktop, which is what interests me, but I hope that at least it contributes more to the rest of the community.

I have never used ubuntu as a main distro and the truth is that I don't like it much. But this is very bad news for free software even coming from someone as dark as canonical. I have read that they are going to fork unity but that is not the worst thing. Mir was the only alternative to wayland that will soon become the only option in linux to display a graphical interface. I don't understand people who say that this is okay because this way efforts are focused on more mature projects that is not the philosophy of free software. There must be alternatives. And about the phone, free software is left in a very bad place with the abandonment of mozilla and now canonical. The next alternative will not be taken seriously.
This impoverishes the ecosystem and that canonical doesn't make me happy.

It seems that the fork of unity has already been released. It is called yunit and has a website: https://yunit.io/
These people have not explained much about their intentions, but it is probably because they are setting everything up.
