Since yesterday, Debian 9 "Stretch" has been available for download, the latest stable version of one of the most widely used distros.

It's interesting to see how Oracle is being run out of business. They deserve it for being idiots and if they keep going like this, they're going to end up killing their flagship products. The only thing that still hasn't found a real substitute is Virtualbox, even though Qemu+KVM is 1000 times better in performance. But the convenience of Virtualbox is undeniable.

I've never used Debian stable precisely because of how old its software is. Now it seems recent but when a year passes and there's still another year until the next version, it's going to be a bit frustrating to see how most distros are running with Gnome 3.70 and Debian is still running with Gnome 3.22. Just thinking that six months ago there was half a year left until the next Debian and they were still on KDE 4 makes me cringe. I don't think it's the best option for the desktop.

I didn't know this site would run on Debian and out of curiosity, why have you chosen that distro?

@palotes I can't think of a better one: mature software, a great community, lots of good documentation. It comes standard with almost all the software I need (except NodeJS which came with an outdated version on Debian 8). With Debian 9 I won't need to resort to any external repositories. That translates to security and easy maintenance.

Ubuntu LTS is another good candidate, but I don't see what advantages I get from using a Debian derivative over the original. The only drawback is support for recent hardware. When I switched to the current server a few months ago, Linux 3.16 didn't recognize everything and has sometimes been a bit problematic. Once again, with Debian 9 all those problems should be a thing of the past.
