iMac, why do I need you
-
Well, let this entry serve as a way for me to vent. We recently bought a print plotter that came with a computer to manage the files to be printed. A RIP, in other words. Well, it has been an odyssey. Here's what happened:
- Random network disconnections.
- every time the program needs to read the material width data, you have to close and reopen the program
- incompatible with my vinyl cutting plotter
- crashes. Yes, Macs, despite what they say about "it never happened to me", I've managed to get several this week.
- And the final straw. It can no longer send to print. It prepares the file, and sends it as if it's printed. A 600mb file, in 40 seconds. Great
So I had to set up a pc, install a debian on it, and then the RIP. Now I have to wait for support to activate it so I can continue working.
So I think the imac, for professional environments like mine, is out of the question. i5, 8gb, 1tb hdd at 5400rpm, FHD screen. For those wondering what imac I was given. And the most serious issue for me: no support. I live in Lanzarote, and if one of those production machines breaks down, just see who the hell is going to fix it before yesterday. I hate to say it, but if you want a work PC, and you can't afford to be without it, better a PC. I'll go to the corner and get the components that broke, or grab any of the PCs I have in the shop, install software and hit the road. Don't think I'm saying the imac is a dud. It is for me and the needs I have. It may also be that High Sierra is incompatible with the software, but the one set up with linux doesn't fail. And it's a PC.
Well, I feel better now.
