Intel begins to disable features
-
It has been seen in changes to the Linux kernel. The deceased is something called Hardware Lock Elisium. It also gives the possibility to disable TSX. If anyone knows what these technologies consist of and their implications on performance, do not hesitate to comment because nothing has been found about it. -
TSX (Transactional Synchronization Extensions) is used to improve performance when running multiple threads simultaneously. It appeared with Haswell in 2013. If it is deactivated, it can cause losses of up to 40% (which was the improvement that Intel announced) although the benchmark tests that have been done so far are demonstrating that in reality it did not improve performance too much. In the end, it is going to be demonstrated that some of these extensions were nothing more than marketing. On the other hand, it seems that this failure and those that are to come related to Hyper Threading are going to penalize performance when running programs with intensive use of multithreading.
