Replacing a HDD in a Server with Raid 1???
-
Let's see champions...
I have a DELL server with a SAS controller that has 2 HDDs in RAID 1 (mirroring each other).
The thing is that one has failed and we have disconnected it. The machine starts up fine.
We have found a new HDD on amazon and when it arrives we will replace it but I have doubts...
is it enough to plug it in and the controller will synchronize everything or do I have to do something????In RAID 5 I have changed HDDs hot without problems. you take out the bad one and put in the new one, the computer synchronizes all the data and that's it, but in RAID 1 I'm not sure...

@dixman From my experience, I should tell you that it is working in degraded mode, when you plug in the new disk it will tell you if you want to rebuild the raid, and it should clone the information. Anyway, it is not a bad idea to make a backup of the disk that is working beforehand, just in case.

Come on "mushroom"
you will have to plug in the new disk, go into the bios of the controller and indicate that the new disk is part of that raid and let it rebuildIt should go "alone", but it's not a bad idea to make a copy of the important stuff before rebuilding as kynes says
